There are threads about replacing the pulley/clutch. Should verify by opening hood and looking at the AC clutch while someone turns the button on. The center should go from stopped to spinning.

I just replaced my clutch, it wasn't terrible. Compressor is more involved and requires replacing a few other things and evacuating/recharging the entire AC system. Compressor replacement from a shop will run around $1k.

FREE: open hood and look at the AC clutch while someone turns the button on. The center should go from stopped to spinning.

Toyota had to replace it once at 40k miles under warranty right when I bought the truck...and I had to replace again at 105k. I barely ever use my AC, lol.

There's a pulley(ring) wrapped around the clutch(center). When the A/C is off the clutch is not spinning(think of a tire not spinning) but when the A/C is on the clutch should be spinning(cycling on and off). The squeal may be because the clutch is locked up and we it engages the pulley it makes the pulley stop.
