Was that really only $10k in damage?

I had snow fall on my roof once. Estimate was just shy of $19,500.

abodyjoe, love the Dart. I've had 3, two 1970's and a 69 GTS. 1970 was my 1st car as a kid. The 1969 was plum crazy with white tail stripe. Want to get another one and put a crate motor in it.

Would some kind of steel front bumper or grill guard have lessened the damage, or worsened it?

OP was lucky the elk didnt go uver his hood. You pretty much need a wall to stop a tall and top heavy thing like an elk from going over the hood, the ARB type bumpers will deflect a obstacle but I would think that it can easily go the wrong way. While living in a burro infested town, we had numerous near death accidents where car vs burro ended up with the top heavy and tall body flying through the windshield. As much as I like the look of them, I decided not to go for a bumper that is angled back for that very reason.

Looks like you hired the right shop...they provided workers not skilled in the tasks assigned to them and you got a new truck out of the deal rather than a repaired one!

In the long run it worked out and was a pain in the ass. I've used the shop for 20+ years, but things have changed. Won't be using them again.
