Has anyone ever used one of those hitch baskets to carry camping gear? I want to know if I should get one of those or maybe a bed extender instead. Let me know what you guys think.

I have one and used it to haul a large white igloo cooler on an out of state trip. Worked well, just don't drive thru any ruts or low spots off road where you might get hung up. I removed mine once I reached my destination camp spot. Also keep in mind your rear license plate is covered, I had no issues.

Thanks, this trip I'm about to go on will be on the road so I'll be fine. And I plan on taking it off when I get where I'm going also.

They work great for hauling extra gear if the bed is maxed out. Usually you can find them on Craigslist for much cheaper. Paid $20 for mine I think, and it came with a swappable 1.25” hitch post for our car as well.

I just went to habor freight and picked uo the biggest steel one they had for $70 with a 20% off coupon. Its rated for 750 lbs but theres no way in hell I'm putting anything over 150 lbs back there. Should work perfectly for me

Have one, and used it over the years. Great for coolers. Put some red reflector tape on it. Cant see it at night. And hurts like a mofo if you bounce a shin off it.

I spent a little extra for a welded aluminum carrier. Much easier to deal with on and off the truck. I have also installed a front hitch receiver and have put 50 qt. Cooler and plan to add small inverter generator. It did fine and was low enough not to block air flow to radiator. Also got the bracket that tightens down so carrier won't move/wobble at all.
Definitely not for the rock climbing overlanders but should work fine 95% of time.

I've got the same one. It'll hold some weight.
