Is this brilliant? or just plain stoopid?

I bought a cheap and beefy swing-away bike rack. Want to chop of the bike mount part at the top and bolt everything but the spare tire to it!

If it works for your needs, then it's absolutely brilliant.

Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

    Power to you!

:pout: Unfortunately no, I would need to unstrap the milk crate and move it to the ground. I just didn't think 40# of fuel would would be stable up higher on the post, or sticking out another 13" from the rack.

That's the kind of logic I use. Why use a bike rack, when you have a box?

How can anyone tell you're an "Overlander" if you don't have traction boards strapped somewhere painfully visible. Best when paired with street tires.

OP - I got stuck behind a Jeep with something like that on Engineer, it had wobbled loose by the time the fucker finally pulled over and let me pass. No off-roading is probably OK, for off-roading, I'd pony up the cash for a Wilco.

You carry a long table with you all the time. It's already built and already paid for. Just a suggestion.

I do agree that the license plate should probably be visible, but what's the difference if it were a cargo carrier filled coolers and firewood? or 4 bikes?

I am re-thinking this and mounting slimmer jerry can type of container higher up on the vertical post.

    #shortbedproblems

honestly though...I glamp with waaaay too much crap in the bed, and the last thing I need is the possibility of fuel leaking on my stuff when bouncing around on washboard roads.
    Also +10hp :dancingbacon:

I drive a DCSB, my main problem with this set up is that on a stock truck the receiver is the only really good recovery point back there. When I'm offroad I don't want to be messing around with a loaded rack trying to get it when I'm in trouble.

True, I would miss having a recovery point back there.

    Seems sketchy...but maybe?

No, unless you can do a perfectly strait pull the much lever arm is going to load the receiver in ways it wasn't meant to be loaded. That's why most receiver shackle adapters are so short.

Surely I don't need to point out the possibilities to have a fully loaded box and carry bikes.

    Right?
