I know this doesn't specifically answer your question (between the Thule and Yak) but here's my answer:
    https://www.1up-usa.com
Hands down the best I've ever used. I sold Yakima and Thule (and Saris and Kuat) for years. 1up has it figured out.
At least give them a look.

Softride Element 4-Bike Rack is another product work a look.

It will drop down to allow opening the tailgate with the bikes on it.

Great for paved road travel, might not be as good as your suggestions for offroad use.

    Love my Thule T2
Easy is use is top notch. Fully integrated locks and locking hitch definitely help ease the mind. My first Thule lasted 15 years and I sold it for $100. I’ve had the T2 a little more than a year and I’ve never been remorseful.

Decided on Yakima. Broke the first day of use with Fat tire bike. Swapped out for Kuat NV 2.0.

Update my first time out w the Yakima it broke and my bike got dropped. Not a happy camper! Went back and bike shop recommended Kuat NV Base 2.0. Took it out on the road and appears very sturdy. Recall on Yakima and nobody told me.

I've got an older Yakima hitch rack that's a pain in the a$$ with my Tacoma. I can't drop the tailgate without it resting on the rack. Do the newer Kuat and Yakima racks fix that problem? Can you drop the tailgate and keep it clear of the rack (in the flat or dropped position?) I'm thinking of selling my older rack for an upgrade. I have a stock bumper and factory hitch.

    Thanks!

Kuat is a very good choice. Tailgate drops without hitting. Quality build!!

Sold my Thule T2 and got a 1up USA rack. Way better and no wobble.

I have a yakima hold up 4. Had the two first a couple years back. Sold it and got this one new (hold up 2 with extention +2). I do road, cx, and mtb (xc). Biggest tires I've had in it were 2.8s and 3.00. Did fine. It's as sturdy as you would expect, hanging off the end as far as it does. Heavy as all get-out though. I've used kuat and I like them, but if I had to replace this one I would do another Yakima. Its folds up imo better than any other racks. Looks good too.

I've had my 1up for 7 years now with no issues. I really like the versatility, it will carry anything from my cross bike with 33mm wide tires to my full suspension 3.0 tire bike without the fatbike adapter kit.

There are other brands too. With a truck bed I rather load it in there. Most people don't have insurance on their bikes, even though they can cost $3 to 10 grand easily.

Yes. I have the double setup, it will clear... it's fairly close.
