Hitch mounted motorcycle carrier for a CBR600RR?

Hey guys,

I’m looking to make a 400 mile trip up north for a Memorial Day ride, I am trying to avoid renting a trailer and have come across a motorcycle hitch carrier and am wondering if any of you have experience with them and recommend or would dissuade me from buying one

I have a short bed and didn’t really want to put all that stress on the tailgate for that long of a period of time

 

Honda says that bike weighs 410 lbs. Seems like you are pushing the limit of that rack. Plus your max tongue weight is 350#. Something I'm missing here?

 

Ah I didn’t even think to look up the max tongue rate.

That's too much bike for a hitch hauler. The haulers are only any good for dirt bikes, scooters, small dual sports, etc.

The heaviest I've ever had on a hauler like that was a cb250 nighthawk, but that's still under 300lbs. I used my trailer for anything bigger.

You are best off putting it in the bed of the truck. It's not that much stress on the tailgate, it will be fine.

 

You'll want a steel one not aluminum. I've had both and the aluminum ones are okay for dirtbikes but I wouldn't use it for a street bike. I'd check around on Amazon, I have the black widow brand carrier.

I found this regarding tongue weight but I'd check your manual:
"When equipped for towing duties, the 3.5-liter Toyota Tacoma will tow 6,800 pounds with a maximum tongue weight of 680 pounds."

There are some companys who make tailgate reinforcement plates. You may also consider some bed stiffeners. I've got the Total Chaos ones and they are great.

 

You’re fine. I’ve done multiple trips from SoCal to norcal in the past with my gsxr and cbr in my old single cab mt short bed; tailgate open.

600cc street bike sounds sketchy. Sounds like the upper limits of heavy? Max Powell Tacoma guy just had his Husky dirt bike fall out of one.

I’d put it in the bed. Remote secure and the truck will ride a lot better without all that weight so far back

 

I have this one and haul my 260pd CRF450x with it once in a while. It gets the job done but I'm not fan, I use extra tie downs through the ramp to the hitch to make it very tight.

I hauled a CBR1000RR from central PA to Lexington KY 7 or so years ago on a steel carrier with no problems, I did run straps from the carrier over the tailgate and hooked to the bed to keep the carrier more stable. This was with a Dodge Dakota though.

 

Nice Nighthawk 700S. this is the best color scheme.
