search turned up everything i didn't want to read.

    Q: anyone suggest a non-locking hitch pin?

could i skate with a 5/8" grade 8 bolt or would that be more expensive than a pin?

    thanks

What's wrong with a $4 hitch pin from Harbor Freight?

Exactly... I feel like a Grade 8 3" bolt, nut, and lock washer would be more expensive

Plus, I'd be paranoid about the nut coming off.

Y'all remember that our factory receiver mounts are 80mm aka 3.15" wide and need a longer pin.

I used this for many years. Still looked new after all the salty winters: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-1465DAT-Stainless-Barrel/dp/B000COX0MY/

A grade 8 bolt will work if you make sure the shank is longer than the receiver tube width so the threads are not loaded in shear. Put a nylon lock nut on there so it doesn't back off. Only drawback to a bolt is you need tools to install and remove it.

Dude who does truck mods told me that my grade 8 bolt was dangerous and he actually
gave me a pin like the one below. Not sure what he was concerned about but he didn't
    think twice about his observation.

I got one of these as well just be sure it will go all the way through and allow for the lock to work.

Just get a pin, its not even remotely expensive... I just got a locking pin at menards for $10, non-locking are even cheaper

I have had the same fulton locking pin for decades. Just bite the bullet, its a one time minor expense that can prevent far bigger issues from happening.

I got a Curt hutch pin. Nothing fancy, only gets used when I’m heading somewhere off pavement. Stays stowed in the toolbox otherwise.
