I think you’re doing something wrong. I have several friends with young kids and they spend money like those kids are producing it in their sleep! To be fair, I think they are hocked in severe debt, so you’re probably doing just fine.

My father-in-laws 07 Liberty is doing the same thing. Gotta love Chrysler quality.

This drives me nuts on my 2017, but my 2008 Canyon also had this, but much worse. I figure it just comes with the territory.

I hit mine with a wire wheel, then rusty metal primer, then a flat black spray paint I had in the garage. Rust came back. This time it just got a good coating of grease  and the stainless lock for my hitch got some silicone grease all around the actual locking cylinder and its rubber cover. The last one I had was "stainless" and it rusted up so bad I had to beat it off with a hammer.
Thank you NJ for dumping road salt when the forecast is 45 degrees and rain.

I used this for my jet ski. Great stuff but not thick enough for the truck in my opinion.

Yep. I have had this happen on every single vehicle with a hitch I have ever owned. I just touch up often with rust converter paint.

Young kids here and I can mostly afford the toys financially, but I definitely can't afford the wrath of my wife if I use them 4 seasons per year. I get a pass to ski and ride my snowmobile during the winter, so luckily I have that lol. I miss the free time before kids the most though - unfortunately it's why I sold my track car.

Anyway, I digress. Some good advice in here, I think between the foam spacers, the rust-oleum, and the Fluid Film you should be able to manage the rust long-term.

You guys have it all wrong. You've got to treat the hitch like the quality piece of cast iron that it is.

Clean it, rub on a liberal coat of flaxseed oil, wipe off excess, then bake in the oven at 485 for an hour.

When you aren't using it, throw a rubber hitch cover over it and it'll protect the bare metal that is exposed.

Toyota coatings are junk and their steel will rust if you look at it wrong.

Wire wheel. Dealer and Toyota will laugh at you. Everyone knows paint never wins in metal to metal contact.
