    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/china-tells-state-banks-prepare-141448869.html

The People's Bank of China has told major state-run banks to prepare to shed dollar holdings while snapping up offshore yuan, which has continued to fall despite prior interventions, sources told Reuters.

The scale of this latest effort to prop up the yuan will be big and could provide a floor to the Chinese currency, according to the report.

The amount of dollars to be sold hasn't been decided yet, but Reuters said it will primarily involve the state banks' currency reserves. Their offshore branches, including those based in Hong Kong, New York and London, were ordered to review offshore yuan holdings and check to see that dollar reserves are ready.

On Thursday, the yuan fell 0.9% to 7.1340 against the dollar and is on track for its worst annual decline since 1994, having lost more than 11% so far this year. Earlier this week, China's offshore yuan this week depreciated to a record-low against the greenback, and its domestic unit fell to its weakest level since the 2008 financial crisis.

The Federal Reserve's hawkish policy path has bolstered the dollar to 20-year highs this year, putting pressure on other central banks and triggering a "reverse currency war."

While a weaker currency can sometimes be beneficial, as it means exports get cheaper, the yuan's recent decline below the psychological threshold of 7-per-dollar has raised concerns.

The People's Bank of China has consistently imposed a strong bias to its currency reference rate to help support the yuan. Central bank officials have also issued verbal warnings against speculating on the yuan and increased the cost of shorting the currency.

But it has refrained from raising benchmark rates and instead has been easing them in an effort to spark growth in an economy that's been dragged down by COVID-19 lockdowns, a real estate crash, and supply chain snags.

Aw heck yeah, I'm going to Paris and England for new years, then french caribbean in February. Good lord, I'm spending way too much time with french people. Euh oh

Brexit. Among other things too. They're not set up for a successful 15 years. I foresee the NHS being a biiiiig point of contention in the next 10 years.

edit: Is Brexit done? Have they brexited or is it still in the process of iting?

    They done Brexitated.

But yes, as I mentioned a couple days ago: We're seeing the endgame of too many entitlement costs without the economic production to support them. NHS will probably be first up for reform. It's already a mess at the trench level.

I honestly didn't know when that flag dropped and they were no longer in the EU.

    https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/...t-deal-first-of-many-hurdles-to-a-smooth-exit

Yeah, I don't think Truss will act on it now but I think within the next 10 years there's going to be a decision about the NHS. It's great for trauma (broken bones, etc) but horrible for anything else. Therapies, preventive care, etc.

I remembered this anecdote about hip replacements in US/Spain:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1w0z7h/the_average_hip_replacement_in_the_usa_costs/

(I'm at work so I'm going on google results that it's what I'm looking for, basically you can fly to Spain, get the surgery, recover, and take a couple months vacation in Spain for cheaper than a hip replacement in the US).

Thats the future of pretty much every system.

Emergency care taxpayer funded - because it can be extremely expensive and is impossible to plan for. Making police and fire a public service but not the ER is insane.

Everything else there are plenty of opportunities to shop around and they should be used.

I think the biggest issue with Brexit is...like when you go against the system..the system WANTS you to fail...NEEDS you to fail...so they will at every opportunity set you up to fail...

Excuse me, Can you pass the salt?
    Get it your self....

Do you know what time it is?
    Get a watch...

Hey, I just have to run into the store for a sec, can you watch my dog?
    I'm not a dog sitter...

I mean the flipside is "You thought you could do it better than us, why are we going to inconvenience ourselves or extend ourselves for you, when you no longer contribute to our system and are only looking to benefit from it?"

First thing I thought of was EASA - now they either have to set up their own agency, or make a deal with EASA.

    https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/brexit

Now, when you do repairs for an airline, will the UK airlines accept repairs to Part 145 under EASA MAGs from US repair stations? If so, EASA is now auditing and supporting for the UK without the UK giving back anything for those services. If not, now the UK needs to set up a new civil aviation authority soup to nuts, and cannot piggyback on EASA instead.

There's a lot more thoughts I have on Brexit, EU etc but I can't get into those for risk of getting shlamma banned bing bong.

    Thanks for the article
I was and kinda still am a fan of solar. To me it makes the most sense on the thermodynamics side of things in practice. But it's starting to look like none of these things are free of major flaws or ethics issues. Occasional parts and upgrades on the taco are looking better everyday for my wallet, my pride, ethics, the environment, etc
Gets to me a bit growing up in such a hostile world

OOOO I've played this game before! Unless gas is like 6+ a gallon, and you're getting 50-60+ mpg on the second vehicle, the up front + maintenance costs take like 200k miles to make a second vehicle better than just letting it ride in the taco.

I respect solar wind and geotherm. Tidal is a pain in the ass, hydro has some tough drawbacks, etc etc.

Solar, Wind, and Geotherm can also be scaled. I can set up a wind turbine in my back yard, I can set up solar panels on my roof, etc - hydro requires large scale infrastructure.
