Hmmm, Interesting...New Tacoma & Short Battery Life?

All the rigs I've ever owned, I was able to have the accessory turned on; running different things - no problem. Last night, I was out waiting for my kiddo during her gymnastics, so I had my phone plugged in (the dash port) for about 1.5 hours.

Tried starting...she was dead, as dead can be. So, my question is... Does this USB port utilize a lot of power? I would have thought the battery could have handled it?

 

Were your lights on? radio? any accessories hooked up to your battery? Seems strange that it would kill it from just a phone plugged in, but if it was a short trip and your battery never fully charge and its cold outside, anything is possible.

 

Might also just be a weak battery. I only got two years out of my stock battery. Did not bother warranting it, just bought a better quality battery

 

Back in the day Japanese vehicles used to have top of everything...now the lowest bidder gets the contract...most components in our beloved Toyota's are of cheap chinese origin. Manufacturers realized that their profit margins can be increased...just like us when we buy a 60 inch TV from Costco for $300...

 

Check battery cable clamps/ground.

 

What electrical mods do you have in the truck?

 

Not unheard of, especially if it was cold (near freezing) out.

In addition to using cheaper batteries, a lot of manufacturer's are going with as small a battery as possible to save space under-hood or weight or ?

The good news is, from what others on this site have reported, Toyota will generally replace these batteries under warranty with no hassle. We've had a cold-snap hit So.Cal. this week and I've lost the batteries in my other Toyota P/U and my VW. Jumped in my Taco the other night and it cranked-over slow so I may be testing the 'free battery from Toyota' theory for myself in the next week or so.

 

Lots of factors could come into play. My 2017 is still running the stock battery while lots of others have complained about only getting 2 years out of it. These trucks have a lot of electronic draw, as do most modern cars. Not normally an issue for normal driving but if you're doing a lot of shorter trips, eventually the battery won't be properly recharged or could just plain go bad. I'd continue to keep an eye on it before ruling out as completely bad just yet. I also drive a lot of miles so my battery has ample time to recharge, which could be why mine has lasted so long compared to others.

 

I thought the usb's don't work when the truck is off,. Id say a Bad battery.

 

Yep guys, my battery lasted only about 6 months, then just died in the early morning hours. Tested it and charged completely and measured only 10 volts on terminals. Sent it to scrap!

yes, 6 months, I was suprised too! So, I called to the dealership, explained everything, of course they told me to bring my truck to the dealership. I asked about just giving me a new battery but he said no, we have to inspect your battery and bla bla bla. Just waist of my time. I ended up with installing my own battery, marine grade battery, 24f group i believe

 

I’m pretty sure I have left my phone in my truck to charge for an hour or so with no problems.

 

Something isn't right, you should be able to charge your phone without killing the Battery. As asked earlier, did you have other options running too, like lights, fan, radio, etc? If so, yeah you can kill a battery with all others options on for that long.

 

It is quite possible that the truck sat for a while on the lot and the battery drained from things that stay hot. They might have just jumped it or fast charged it and the life had already been depleted. I have Ford E450's that I service - and if they sit upwards of 3 to 4 weeks - I usually have to jump them. Normally, when I know a bus is going to sit a while, or most vehicles - I simply disconnect it. Although some vehicles it is not recommended to do so. I think you will be good with a proper replacement battery, as you probably will never know the history of your original. I spend days at my hunting trailer in the woods with no electric, and use my truck to charge our cell phones and other electronics through a direct USB port to the battery.

 

I had my factory battery replaced under warranty at 30 months because of a bad cell. That being said, consider getting an external USB charger, so you don’t have worry about draining your truck battery.

I had my brand new 2022 battery die after I was detailing the truck with the radio on using car play. After cleaning I went to turn it on and it wouldn't start. Had to get a boost. Next day brought it to the dealership. They tested it and it came back all good and they waved the diagnostic fee and I was on my way.
I was disappointed that it happened and I'm nervous that it will die again while I'm out camping or somewhere remote.

 

I will say some stuff from China is of good quality. Some stuff is crap. Depends on the factory.

 

I agree. I just never understood the mentality that American made products are so much more superior than foreign goods. Simply untrue

 

maybe if you left your phone charging overnight, you would lose some battery power. These are probably around 50 ah batteries and you're not drawing near that with a phone charger.
