...he was the man who got away with ending others careers with questionable hits. That hit on Kariya was several seconds late and completely viscious. Sure Stevens was a beast, but when I look at that clip you posted, I fail to see how what he did is anything but detrimental for the game. Those Devils teams slowed the pace of the game to complete boredom. I loved to hear about them losing because I couldn't stand watching them ruin the game.

 

So Babcock has a history of always looking pissed.

Time it all ya want. It was vicious, and late. 2 seconds is plenty of time in a game that moves as fast as hockey. I agree the rules were different back then and Scott Stevens was simply taking advantage of that. In my opinion however, this is just another example of honour dissolving from the game. Now we need rules for every little grey area because guys like stevens feel free to exploit it at the expense of respecting others safety. Just like the owners now need a CBA to protect them from each other, the players need rules to protect them from each other.

What kind of bullshit is this really?

 

It was a little late , granted , but I have to say , I miss the old days , today Kariya wouldn't have been allowed to come back on to the ice and his courage in doing so would have never been shown , watch the video again and look at Stevens' face when Kariya skates back out , he is in disbelief .

That raw emotion doesn't show up nearly as much anymore , the sport is diluted and sterilized

While I agree with you, the "heroics" are not as prevelent today as they were. Its better to be smart than dead. Im a huge fan of big hits, as long as they're legal (as most of Stevens were at teh time) The long after affects outweigh the risks. Jim Mcmahon (80's-90's Bears QB) has dementia now and hes in his early 50's. Look at all the all stars that were out at one point last season. It takes away from the game, and it sucks seeing careers cut short. Im willing to be Kariya wishes he never got back on the ice after that hit now. They didnt even win the cup. But hey he gave it his all right?

Legal bit hits can do as much harm as illegal big hits , you would have to take hitting , fighting and fast skating out of the game to make it safe , oh and sticks , frozen pucks and skates
