Chris, as a Canadian, do you care about the Winter Classic? I thought it was more geared towards getting the casual fan involved.

I wonder how much pressure Bettman is getting from advertisers and beer companies right about now. They're seeing $0 back and I'm sure they're not happy about it. Also there's NBC who just signed the 10 year tv contract in the States, they have to be pretty pissed as well.

No, the truth is I dont really care about the winter classic. At least as it is currently presented. That said as a guy who grew up in an environment where I was at the local rink playing outdoors 5 out of 7 nights/week, 3-4 months of the year I appreciate the sentiment implicit in the idea.

I think they should remove the equipment, contact and heavy shooting from the players at the winter classic and essentially have them play a glorified game of shinny. Keep the game worth 2 points so that the players are motivated to win and I think we would see a display of speed and skill that would blow our minds. I believe the average fan would be surprised by how skilled the 4th line grinder on their team really is. It will never happen, of course, but for me this is what outdoor hockey is about. It is pure and honost.

I agree Bettman feels pressure from advertisers. This is why he is suddenly giving back to the players imo. Otherwise I think the owners would, for the most part, be fine with letting the players suffer.

Look at Paul Bissonnette - he's a plug for PHX but in 2 games he has 2G 1A over in the EIHL. Granted you can make the arguement that he's currently playing in a league that's not as competitive as the NHL, but he still has to have some decent hands to do this:

(that's him scoring 10 sec into the vid)

Surprisingly, a lot of NHL 4th liners were once the leading scorers of their teams. Raffi Torres comes to mind...

fucking scrub teams are holding us back.... wipe them off the schedule and we are good to go. We all know there are to many shitbag bum teams in horrible city's now

"Players’ association officials said privately that the league also responded Thursday to a union offer on revenue-sharing between clubs. Last season wealthier N.H.L. clubs paid $150 million in revenue-sharing to poorer clubs. The union wants that figure raised to $260 million, with a large portion of that money earmarked for the six teams chronically in the deepest debt: the Islanders, the Phoenix Coyotes, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Florida Panthers, the Nashville Predators and the Carolina Hurricanes."

I live near Ft Collins CO and we have an ECHL team up here. My buddy is a manager at a microbrew/restraunt and said Brandon Dubinsky was in town a few weeks ago. He and a bunch of players boozed it up after the game. A lot of the employees are on a beer league team and said he was cool and signed a bunch of crap.

Its about the only cool hockey story I have at this point.

Watching the abbotsford vs Oklahoma city game on Sportsnet, seen myself on TV
They showed a replay of Taylor Hall getting creamed by Sarich in a game last year, I was sitting 3rd row in the corner about 20 ft from the hit.

Last paragraph is the $$$ maker:

"A dark time," Recchi told The Globe. "And it has been frustrating to see how it's played out, obviously. If Paul had stayed on the job, I don't think you would have seen this happen. The two sides would have started talking long before, maybe a year sooner (in 2011), and not with two or three months to go before (the CBA) expired. There would have been something in place, absolutely. And now here they are, trying to get to 50 per cent and also trying to make everyone whole. Well, you know, with the escrow we paid, I know I wasn't made whole over the last few years I played. That's just the way it was and we accepted it."

Shane Hnidy is in media locally. He has been expressing a similar view as Rechi's for some time.
In the end, many players will remember Donald Fehr as the guy who helped shorten their career, because a lot of 3rd and 4th liners will have seen their last NHL games if this season is lost.

    Fuckin shit-show...

This made me laugh... the mediator from the NFL strike said he'd do the NHL lockout for free: http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/20257/renown-mediator-wants-crack-at-cba-talks

    Here's the catch:
So a lawyer from NY who's never played the game and a former MLBPA rep have passion for hockey?
