So who is gonna give in?

It would seem to me either the league has to give on contract length and/or CBA length or the players need to fold their hand. Strangely, the one hundred million dollars didn't get the players to bite. Any predictions from the TWers as we go forward toward to the 11th hour ?

sadly, this is my gut feeling as well even though it makes little sense to allow for it.

If they couldn't agree on a deal by now, I don't know why there would be any optimism for Jan 15. I think this season is pretty much a wash at this point. UFB, the league looks like such a joke now. How the fuck can you lose 2 seasons in less than 10 yrs. I think this will damage the sport pretty bad.

Agreed about hurting the sport, it seems they have been struggling to keep fans/viewers last couple years anyway. So take it away, and even more will forget about it. Sad.

The league will not suffer north of the border. Buildings will continue to be sold out and the advertisers will be all in. The business of hockey will suffer in the U.S., but true fans of the game will watch. A short season, should it happen, is an intense and enjoyable one.

I have a very hard time imagining the players will vote to dissolve their union. We are looking at a deadline date now. It is human nature to get things done when the end date looms. With the pressure building, this could very well get solved at the last minute. Urgency and fear will change things.

If they end up dissolving their union, we might lost part of next season too. Awesome guys!

It will never happen. It is uncharted water and too many players would lose their careers. It is a threat/bluff.

Considering about half of the NHL teams are in the red, whatever gains they had these last few yrs as far as fan support goes, I think that will take a huge hit. The popular teams will always be fine, but the struggling teams will be hurt pretty bad.

So if I refuse to give any of my money or attention to the NHL I'm not a true fan?

Heck if they can strike I personally think the fans should strike when they get back to playing.

I never liked the "true fans will stick it out no matter what" argument. The NHL provides a product, as do each team. PPL argued the Pens didn't ahve true fans when they sucked for several yrs. No ppl just didnt want to waste their time and money watching crap. It forced the ownership to makes moves, and develop a better product that the market would buy. Looking at leafs fans, you could put a bunch of monkeys on ice and leafs sweaters and they would pay to watch that.

The NHL had a good product and they are screwing themselves. The league is having some of the highest ratings ever, and instead of riding that wave they jumped off.

I agree that there is a distinct difference between fans of hockey and fans of a particular franchise.

I believe that fans of hockey will watch hockey because they enjoy watching a good game. If the team in my town blows I will be less inclined to watch them. That said it doesn't mean I won't watch other teams that I like. For example, while I am not a die-hard Oilers fan, I really enjoy watching their team. As I have stated in the past, while I always cheer for my local team, I am a fan of hockey first not a franchise fan. I will watch hockey when it is on TV because I love the game. I grew up playing and watching. I like to think I have a somewhat refined sense for the game. In watching this way I am still supporting the NHL.
The NHL and its teams are a business that has a monopoly on most of the worlds great players. This wont likely change because of the current business negotiations. The game will be great when it returns, because the players are great. The people who like hockey will watch in whatever way they choose. I personally dont give a shit if the NHL loses money because people in the States wont watch. In fact, I kinda hope they don't because I would like to see shitty markets fold so that the density of talent increases.
Don't kid yourself, Toronto is trying to have a good team. They just happen to suck in management as well. The games there are continually sold out through thick and thin because the number of Leaf fans is exponentially larger than the number of Pens fans. Furthermore Canadians on average love hockey ahead of all other sports.

So yeah, the NHL is screwing themselves, but keep in mind, when you are backed by more money than god. You are usually allowed the self-indulgence.
