I think the population of the metro area of Columbus is not really the whole story.

The NHL placed the team there for two reasons:

    1) Exclusive exposure as the only professional (minor league baseball and soccer not included) team in the city.

    2) Centrally located in the middle of the state to draw fans from throughout Ohio. And my attendance to games confirms that.

It's obviously not a NY, Chicago or Philly situation with a huge metro area, but Ohio State is their only competition...

    Correction.

According to the attendance table our HOME average is 13,495.

    That sucks.

    And I stand corrected

Time will tell. Hopefully I'll live to see it.

It would be similar to introducing the NFL to Saskatchewan. It wouldn't be the big game in town. May be a great product, but not what the locals grew up with. So there is a learning curve, so to speak.

I guess we'll agree to disagree...

Agreed , that is " paid attendance " ie the club owns some seats . I've seen some Thrashers games where the announcers commented that the announced attendance was 14 000 and there was more like 4 000 people actually in the building .

For a minute, I thought OZ hijacked your keyboard :D

I agree about the the southern teams. Especially with hockey. And the NFL takes a back seat to college football in many areas in the south. It's about whether they win or not. A lot of front runners down there.

And the southern U.S. has a very transient population, as workers and retirees have relocated there. So the allegiances to sports teams may lie in other areas of the country.

I truly think Columbus will be a very good hockey town. But it may take a while and some wins and playoff appearances will help...

And Hugh (or is it Mr. Jass?) will probably support them even more after tonight's game...;)
