If the player conspired with a team to do it, basically it would be a way to turn a 7 year max deal into a 9 year max deal. 20 million dollars is a big difference. The new CBA was designed to avoid such loop holes though I would suspect that, within the rules and without proof of conspiracy, it would be legal.

 

Like the IR loophole Chicago took advantage of.

Players would also be considering the amount of income tax charged by different states and I've heard Florida's is one of if not the lowest in the US, so that could balance things out in favor of TB.

 

That plays into my point. If Stamkos leaves Tampa it will be because he wants to. It likely won't be because he can make more money somewhere else.

I wouldn't count on the "LeBron" factor either that the media in Canada has been pushing. I don't think Stamkos has a chance of winning in the next 2 years in TO and I doubt he wants to go to Montreal either. I'd be surprised if he goes to either team.
