So if Matthews scores 410 goals this year the Leafs have a good chance of making the playoffs?

Seriously though, I get that he played a great game and hes a great player but I think his name was said about 2000 times during the broadcast.

It got to the point where the sens would score and they would go right back to Matthews within 5 seconds. They wouldn't even analyze the goals, just show Matthews highlights.

"Sens score in OT!" "Matthews was really good tonight and must be dissapointed" "Heres some more Matthews plays"

Comon now... this is McJesus situation all over again. Great hockey player with a shit supporting case on a crappy team in a self-centered media frenzy market.

Dont get me wrong I'm happy for the guy and he deserves praise... but theres 2 full professional teams worth of players on the ice that deserve a bit of praise as well. Turris scored 2 goals, including the tying goal and game winner - and barely even a mention.

Congrats to the Oilers for beating the fLames on the first game in the fancy new digs. Just watched the highlights. Looks like it was a wild game!!

And congrats to Matthews on an impressive debut!! 4 Goals.....holy SHITZ!! McDavid still managed to tally a couple goals and an assist.

Poor Sens fans. Never getting any coverage in Ontario... or Canada lol. It'll never change man. No one on the French side gives a shit about the Sens because they are an "english" team and that leaves Ottawa with around 1 million potential fans in the immediate Ottawa area. Toronto attracts all of Southern Ontario for fans. It's simple math for broadcasters. Appeal to a tiny market or the huge one.

Plus, to be fair, even good morning america had a segment on Matthews lol. What he did hasn't been done by a player, rookie or not, since 1917.

My dad is a Sens fan because that's where he grew up. An English kid on the Quebec side. Anyways when the Sens came he jumped over to the team from the Habs immediately. When we go to Sens games here in Alberta the tickets are easy to find and the Stadium is Red (Calgary). When we go to Leafs games the stadium is a miss mash of blue, white, and red jerseys and the tickets are night on impossible to find let alone buy. Christ this will be my first Leafs game this year in a half decade and I get at least 5 games a year though the companies I've worked for. A story I always love to tell is about when the Sens made the finals about a decade ago. My dad and some of his wealthy buddies bought a box with literally hours worth of notice to go watch one of the games in the final. Where else in the league can you do that? Ottawa, because locally they can't even get enough corporate support to fill those every night during the playoffs.

As for the Leafs more than just Matthews had a good game last night. I was able to catch the game on my PVR later last night. Marner looked comfortable and was a force. Nylander setup almost every one of Matthews goals and they displayed excellent chemistry. Rielly looked great too and definitely had a lot of presence on both ends of the ice. I don't see the news talking about those players either. It's all Matthews and it should be after that effort.

I'm very curious to see how the GAA works this year though. I find it funny no one is talking about the scores last night with 3 out of 4 games going well above 5 goals total. So did they go to the new pads? I think they did IIRC and if they did it looks like 1980's GAA might become a reality again. Maybe the great young players will have a shot at Gretzky's records under these conditions if they hold. No, I'm not saying Matthews will beat Gretzky to 50 or something crazy like that, but a lot of his records were protected by the fact that it was much tougher to score in the NHL for the last 20 years than it was in the previous 20. Now a player with great offensive talent, any of the new phenoms, might have a shot at breaking one or two of them if this situation of 7-4 and 5-4 games holds true for most of the season.

 

Hunwick has balls to play the puck there rather than turtle. Great hit by Neil. Don't worry, when you play the Florida teams you'll hear lots more about your team and less about the opposition... locally on the radio lol.
