The sad thing is how little Ottawa has to show for the last 20 years. A Dodgy ownership situation during much of that time, difficulty finding corporate support, and some horrible luck/play in the playoffs in every year but one doesn't help but with the talent they had the opportunity to draft in the 90s a cup should of come.

Toronto just kept trying to buy the cup and while that was entertaining up to the early 2000s it left a hangover in the salary cap Era that they tried to drink there way back out if with the same plan. Now it seems like under better ownership with hockey minds who want to win at the helm they are doing things the way they are supposed to be done. They are building through the draft and trading for the future. Hopefully that will lead to a window in 3-5 years where they will have a shot in the playoffs.

I never stopped wearing my Leafs jersey though and I'll always be a fan of the team. I swear it's the hatred and jealousy the fans of every other Canadian team, especially Ottawa, that feeds my love of the Leafs. A Leafs fan never has to worry about the viability of the team or whether or not attendance and corporate support can allow for the best operation possible. The money and media are always there, unlike most other Canadian teams.

An interesting read that talks about endorsement deals that Matthew could have. I find it interesting because I don't think people figure in the money players may make by being either extremely exceptional in the entire market or the expectation of being exceptional in the right market (Canada). Looks like McDavid is already making bank even though he's on an entry level deal.

I wonder how much a player like Stamko's could of made in a Leafs sweater? Interesting to think that might be a factor for big centers now especially for those players who are just outside the top 3 in the league.

Bubbagump, for sure. I don't get why they felt the need to have Eichel ride a Razor scooter down the runway, when it looked like he almost fell over as he turned to go back down haha.
Look at what happened when Crosby came into the league. It was good timing but Reebok had him locked up before he was even out of 'The Q' and his arrival in the NHL went hand in hand with Reebok taking over. So he had to be rolling money being the league's big hype with his merch sales (his Pens jersey and tees sold like crazy here and probably elsewhere before he even played a game) and being the poster boy for Reebok apparel and equipment. I know when the Reebok gear first came out, I bought a bunch of that stuff because it looked awesome and his name was everywhere advertising it.

Yeah I still have a pair of 87 skate guards lol.

I think it's interesting though how if, let's say, Matthews had of went to Florida he probably wouldn't be looking at the same set of deals he will be as a Leaf. Food for thought I think for young players. The right market will pay you more for your talent if they have enough fans. The team doesn't even have to front the extra cash lol.

Yeah cracked ribs , I must have mistaken a replay of the power play with him on it later in the game as him back in the game , I was only 1/2 paying attention

Auston Matthews scored 4 goals in his first game in the NHL... beginners luck though?

The thing is Matthews was never touted because he can score goals. Hes suppose to be an all around #1 centre like Toews who can also score when needed. 4 goals is just ridiculous, but I think he is a 70-80 pt guy when hes developed. If he hits 50 -60 pts this year I'll be super happy

I'll get excited if, and only IF, they're anywhere close to that position in Feb/Mar. Even if they're in the mix.....then I'll get jacked.
