I dont think teams like the Leafs or the Sabres should be giving up any assets for any player thats older than 25. Go with the youth and develop the team. There arent any shortcuts, sometimes it sucks but thats how you build a winner. not by giving up your assets for aging rentals.

 

If they give up over 25 pending UFA's for true top 3 defense man that they can sign long term I'm fine with it. JVR is great but we need more help on the backend. It's not a shortcut if you sign him long term and he's young enough to stay consistent over the length of the deal. The Leafs are within 3 years of being something. They don't have to wait till year three if they can find a deal that will work for them now without hurting that objective.

Now if the Leafs are considering trading high draft picks or studs on the farm team for him then your point is absolutely valid. Those sort of deals are not worth it at this point to the Leafs and won't be for several years.

Shattenkirk apparently had the Leafs on his trade list from this summer so it's a possible deal. Guess who was reported as not being on it lol? Edmonton. So even when they have McDavid, a playoff future, and a new rink players still don't want to live there lol.

 

I think no trade clauses need to go. For the money / dream job you should play where you're told.

 

It'll never happen. It's the only way to differentiate contracts now under a salary cap.

I think a neat move, that would never happen but still, would be for the NHL to equalize salaries after taxes and use the extra money collected to eliminate the large escrow that's being collected now.

 

It won't happen but I agree. The NTC is strapping teams down. But I guess that is partially the GMs own fault for handing them out like candy. If your name isn't Kane, Sid, Ovi etc then you shouldn't be getting 8years and a NTC. But GMs will sign their 3rd line winger to an 8year limited movement contract anymore lol.
