The kicker is the 7 years IMO. It's a long contract.

It's long for sure but if Zaitsev does anything negative in the long run he'll flee back to Russia and since he's under 35 for the length of the contract it won't hurt the Leafs.

There is a good chance Zaitsev will mature into a number 2 D in a couple of years once he's fully comfortable with the NHL. You have to pay for upside somehow and I'm guessing 7 years was the way to do that.

Most quality players his age are getting long contracts now it seems. If he turns into a number two D, the contract is perfect for the Leafs

MSG was crazy tonight, this series is getting rather exciting. Should be a good game on Saturday for sure. Was in section 213, great seats!

Look, I'm not a fan of selling a call. Not cool at all. But is this like the first one in history? It happens all of the time. Oshie did it last year, same scenario. People do it all of the time, so whatever. I wish it would stop but it happens. Give James Neal a call, he did it all of the time when he played here. He's Canadian BTW, because apparently that somehow matters.

As far as Bonino not being a good hockey player (or even hinting that he is a sissy or something)..please. 95% of the league wouldn't dare lay down in front of shots like that guy does. He is fearless. Also, dude has been so clutch for us since he's been here. Huge, timely goals and solid play across the board. Ya, the icings were bad at the end of last game, but there is a lot of good stuff on tape, from Bonino. So I totally disagree with that video.

Never get excited about something Cherry says. He is a relic of the past, sure he's fun to hear and a Canadian icon but the guy is stuck in the 1970's with his interpretation of hockey. If it were up to him players wouldn't even wear helmets (check YouTube, he's gone off on visors and helmets plenty of times lol.) You can't take a guy too seriously who is on a tape delay because of his big mouth and predisposition to insult just about every nationality with his antique view of the game. I stick Cherry and Roenick in the same bucket when it comes to commentating, they both blow a lot of hot air but don't carry much weight any more with their comments because everyone knows they're simply jaded against the modern game.

If I ever meet Cherry, and people do my brother had a 10 minute conversation with him during the 2004 playoffs, I'd love to open with telling him the play was onside (see how many get this reference.)

On YouTube you can find HNIC sucking Bonino's virtual dick during last years playoffs. One dive and he's the worst hockey player ever? Don't buy into the media trolling for stories in the playoffs trying to make the stories more exciting. With both Canadian teams on the slide into golf season they have to do something to try and keep the casual viewer.

Ya that is true. All good points. I mean, I'm not fired up over it or anything. I know how Cherry is. He's funny and I don't dislike him. I can't say that I always agree with him either. But I think he was a little over the top on the video. And of course in general, a lot of people taking Bonino to the woodshed over that call. Some of it is deserved, because you hate to see a call like that at a key moment. And I'm not proud of any of our guys when they dive. But I still have a ton of respect for Bonino, as a player. I think he is a fantastic player and willing to grind and block shots, that most guys in the league would never do.
