Im no computer whiz but a VPN, virtual private network, essentially reroutes the information(like your location) being sent from your computer so it appears as though you're somewhere you aren't. Sonwhen the NHL app "asks" your computer where you are, the VPN will answer as though you're in Finland or India or wherever the VPN is based. And since that location is outside of the Oilers marker you're no longer blacked out. There's a million different vpn apps/programs you can purchase that will be cheaper than any other option aside from a free stream. The benefit is that you'll be streaming from the legit NHL site and don't have to deal with all the ads and pop ups on the free streaming sites. You would still however have to purchase the NHL.tv subscription, but even that plus a vpn would be cheaper than cable for the whole NHL season.

I've used this for 4 years now. It's always running on my home PC. If Anaheim is playing Arizona, I pick a VPN somewhere away from both of those cities. IF it happens to be a nationally televised game, I usually go on a Germany VPN (which is also how I watch the playoffs)

Once it's up, I usually Chromecast to my TV.

The only thing is sometimes VPN's may not be as fast as your home internet causing video quality issues, but after the stream is running you can disconnect from the VPN and continue streaming with no issue.

I know it's only pre-season, but I gotta laugh at the Leafs for losing back-to-back to my SENS.

    Yeah,

I rotate through all the VPNs on and hit F5 on my stream until it loads. Once it does, I turn off the VPN and head downstairs.
...Or I forget to turn off the VPN and I sit down to a 100p image where I cant see the puck and have to walk back upstairs to turn off the VPN.

Yeah - I understood the concept, location wise. But this explanation helps.

I guess I'll look into this.

Since getting into this newer home - we reduced down from 4 TV's, to 1 TV (currently). It's in the basement, with Netflix and a Blu Ray player. I've spent maybe a grand total of 3 hours watching it - in the last 3 to 4 months. We decided not to put a TV in the Living Room - and no one has missed it. And I'm not putting one in the bedroom anymore - even though it's all wired to go. I'll likely have a TV in the garage - for winter bike training, and treadmill runs. But that one will just be Netflix and a Blu Ray player as well. And I could connect a computer to it - if a hockey game lines up with training.
Otherwise, I just have my laptop in the Living Room. So that will be my hockey device. No one else here watches - so that works.

What I meant, and you quoted, was that the Rogers/Telus/Bell television online steams require a cable subscription. You mentioned Rogers but you can't get a stream from them without a login that comes with a cable package. NHL.tv is totally separate and of course with a VPN could be accessed anywhere as you and @PerfectTekniq have explained. You need a VPN even with a Rogers/Telus/Bell television account though for a local team because there are blackouts and restrictions around the NHL TV deal and team rights as I mentioned in not so many words. When my brother watches the Flames, he uses a VPN to login in under my Telus Optik account (Telus cable over optic line), and then logs off the VPN. This is similar to watching the game from other streams except it's basically TSN, CBC, or CTV with all the analysts just like watching the game on cable.

I remember at one point before the Rogers deal the NHL was going to stream games to the XBox under their own paid application but the deal killed that. That would of been sweet.

That reminds me to kill my cable, as I've been about the same. I got all the movie channels and have turned the tv on like once in the last 2-3 months. Surfing the net is the new tv experience ... most would choose a laptop over tv now.

No he doesnt. I dont have cable but got NHL GameCenter and watch online. Much better than those shitty streams IMO. And yes, it works on xbox or any of those streaming boxes.

Nice. No VPN? Seems like that's a solid option.

It's essentially the same as NHL.tv, which used to be called NHL Game Center, so you'll still need a VPN if you're in the market of the team you want to watch. But no cable required.

Nope. Only time you need a VPN is if you want to watch in-market teams (aka if in Alberta cant watch Flames/Edm unless on a VPN). I watched every Sens game from AB last year, other than the Sens vs Edm or Calgary games (which I was personally at so no harm done). Otherwise no blackouts and the streams are awesome quality
