As for Yashin, I've never hated the guy but I was never really a huge fan of him either. His trade request was shocking at the time but we did end up getting a great deal out of it. Yashin for Chara, Mukalt, and Spezza? Ill take that any day

I'm a little surprised Emery isn't one of the goalies but also not considering the whole wife beating thing going on right now with him.

 

2020 is a long time away lol. Though you can tell that the NHL has a massive hard on for Seattle right now. I'm pretty sure Bettman has been masturbating to Stadium news for weeks.

Wouldn't it make sense to just call the team the Thunderbirds and use the existing jerseys? I mean with a color change to differentiate from Vancouver.

 

I don't think they'll take the Thunderbirds, they have their own long history here. As for name, I would prefer the Steelheads, not a fan of the Metropolitan's because they'll be called the Mets. I do like the color scheme though. It's been funny to watch the NHL, Bettman, specifically hide his interest over the last year or two. They want in bad. The arena deal is done, it's happening, I think the expansion will be officially awarded soon, meaning few months.

Realignment happened for Seattle, not Vegas from what I've heard. They thought the first arena deal was a done deal but on the day of voting the lady council members formed a group and gave it the middle finger out of spite. It was actually the better deal for the city and the fans.

 

I haven't really put a lot of thought into the name, should be marine/forestry based and I like the green/gold color scheme.

 

Seattle rainstorm.

The first professional hockey game I went to was the penguins echl team, Wheeling Thunderbirds. They had to change their name due to some kind of dispute with Seattle.

 

I doubt the Thunderbirds will stick around once there is an NHL team present. Unless the ownership group is the same they'll leave. I don't think Seattle has the hockey demand to carry both teams and the Thunderbirds have some high costs because of there travel schedule.

The NHL wants a team in the NW. It's their blank spot right now. Vancouver doesn't attract NW fans like a team in Washington will. The NHL can get more money out of their TV deal if they have a team in the NW, plain and simple. That's what gets Bettmans rocks off, it's what always gets him going, more money. He doesn't give a shit about the game itself.

The NHL had made it clear they wanted two more teams in the West to allow Detroit and Columbus to move into the Eastern Conference. Both Columbus and the Wings had been promised a decade ago that they would eventually be moved into the Eastern Conference so the NHL needed two additional teams in the West.

The NHL didn't want to comment on Seattle because the NHL didn't want to be on the hook should Seattles potential ownership group fail to come up with the 700-800 million dollars the league will ask for its 32nd franchise. Remember all the arena talk in Seattle was based, at one point, on getting a major sports franchise. The league didn't want to be committed to anything until the league was paid and the arena deal was done because of the potential the city could sue them should they get roped into an arena deal. Now that the deal has been done without NHL commitment, the league can begin the expansion process without any fear of being on the hook for the costs of the renovation.

The league has been deflecting the entire Seattle situation for the same reason they deflect questions around the Coyotes, Hurricanes, and Panthers. It's bad for business to speculate on team movement. Seattle wanted a team, and it would be cheaper to move a team. That being said Gary doesn't want to lose teams and his reach for fan/TV coverage, so expansion was always the preferred option.

Houston is also looking for a team from what I understand, though I'm guessing they will be very quiet until the Seattle deal is done. Once the league is paid, they can move a team there.
