Lol I never said anything about a cup. You guys are hilarious. Half of your teams tried to get Tavares, even offered him more money, and couldn’t get it done. Don’t get pissy because a player finally made a choice with his head and his heart. The Isles were going no where and the Leafs now have one of the best center lineups in the league.

 

I do love how right after the signing happened every team that could locked up their high end potential free agents for 2019. No one wants to be the Isles next summer and get nothing out of an Allstar player deciding to leave.

Not sure if joking or trolling lol. Toronto actually dumped salary on July 1st, even after Tavares. Basically by going with Calder winning players off the Marlies on the 4th line and dumping JVR, Bozak, and Komarov the Leafs still have the ability to sign their young stars. I would expect one might get traded now to try to get a good another defensemen, it’s Nylander whose the most likely to leave. I’m not even sure that will happen. It all depends on how the Leafs D core looks early in the season. If they can take another step forward and Gardner can smarten up maybe they don’t move him.

Plus similar to the Pens the Leafs can now run two lines that teams would like to focus on with their top pairing, which will give Matthews more room to work. This is similar to how having Malkin and Crosby on separate lines gives both of them more room to work.

 

@def67 The Flames picked up James Neal. I like the changes they’ve made so far. Hamilton was a problem in the team.

 

Not joking or trolling. In theory, I think their ability to roll lines will pay-off. No arguments there. But I felt like the way Babcock was with him at the end of the year and in the playoffs was almost like messing with the kids head. No PP1 ice time, and it was pretty publicized that Matthews and Babcock weren't on the best of terms by year's end. So you draft the kid and he's supposed to be your #1 Center, face of your team. Now you have local Canadian media darling in there. I won't be shocked if he get's the 'C', he's also making some decent coin. So are they going to pay Matthews more? I just think when you have a guy who is supposed to be your cornerstone player, surrounded by other young players, you don't bring in a veteran #1. Crosby and Geno started together and had the team built around them, so in that respect, it is not the same.

I think the media made more of the Matthew/Babcock interaction than there actually was a problem. Matthews wasn’t happy with his play at the end of the year and neither was Babcock. They met this summer privately and by all accounts everything is fine. I mean it was confirmed that Matthews made a personal phone call to Tavares on his own on Friday to lure him to the team. I don’t think that a player who feels threatened would do that.

Time will tell. However I think Tavares can free up time and space for Matthews on top of protecting him from the media. If Matthews already had the C I could see there being an issue. Given though that Marleau was the real locker room captain last year I don’t see Matthews caring about whatever the Leafs do with the Captaincy at this point. He’s not the leader of the Leafs right now so why would he expect it, especially since he’s been under Babcock for a few years and understands he won’t just give the C to the most talented player.

As for what Matthews will get paid I have no idea. Values on the top end guys, particularly those under 25, are all over the place. Matthews fell off late this year and he doesn’t deserve McDavid money. I hope he has the sense to take something in the 8 range on a bridge deal but who knows. If Matthews had of kept up his health and scoring pace with what he did in his first year he’d be worth Tavares money. As it is, he and the Leafs are better off working out a bridge type deal.

Tavares in most lists is the top ten best players in the league. When you get a shot on that in at a good value in his prime you don’t turn it away.

I think the biggest concern for the Leafs now is the Isles potentially putting a crazy offer sheet out on Nylander. Not that Nylander is a piece the Leafs can't afford to lose, but the compensation back for him would not be what the Leafs need today. They could always turn those number 1 picks into something they need, but why not do that with a trade with Nylander in the first place. I think the Isles will do something brash in the next couple of weeks. Lou isn't the kind of guy to sit with a finger up his butt after losing out on his star player.

From the sounds of it, seems like he's OK with taking less ice time/responsibility, I think it's a good thing. They showed they don't need to rely on him anymore, but he can still be a dominating force.
