I spent the last 4 months arguing the fact that Nylander was not worth the money fans wanted to pay him. But honestly hes not much lower than 7. I would say right now he is a 6.25-6.5 player. He has high end analytic numbers in every category and is one of the best neutral zone players in the league. Stuff you never see unless you watch him 82 game. Hes not worth 7 mil though this is a high number. The one thing that bumped him was seeing Ehlers sort of level out instead of progress and he took 6 mil.
The whole "I will not trade you" stuff is ridiculous. If you listened to Overdrive on TSN yesterday Dubas was there and he totally back pedaled on that question they asked and explained it is his "intention to keep players like him". I am not insider but like Sterdog I have been close watching everything leafs forever now and I am almost certain the deal came together like we talked about. Dubas would have said "i will give you your 7.5 but it will not be until december 1st when the cap hit is as low as possible, and it will come along with a front loaded tradeable contract". Nylander and his agent keep saying to the media that he wants to stay here blah blah blah so I think that shows you he wants the fans to know if something happens it not from his end. But to get the money in the end he decided to take the chance he could be moved.
On Marner and Matthews, I think the Marner numbers are insane but just like the media pushing Nylander they will do the same because it pushes the negative like always. If you take his comparable players in the last 8 years I cant think of anyone other than Gaudreau, Kane, and Tarasenko. Gaudreaus cap hit % to a 83mil cap would be 7.67mil, Tarasenko would be 8.52, and Kane on his 2nd deal would be 9.2. Marner slots in the middle there somewhere around 8.5 max if he keeps this up

Good post. I always rely on you and @Sterdog to keep me up to speed in Tor. I try to follow them but like you said, when you aren't watching 82 games, some things go unnoticed.

Ugh, Gaudreau is such an over rated player though. He puts up points in meaningless games and is worse in his own end than Phil Kessel. I don't really know a Flames fan that likes him as a player anymore. He used to be so brilliant on the PP and 4 on 4 that his weaknesses were covered up by his ability to put up game winning goals. Now that he doesn't even do that most fans are frustrated to heck with him.

The 10 million number I threw out for Marner would be assuming he comes close to winning a points award this year in the NHL. If he does that drives up value even though it would be only because Tavares is on his line. Like @maxpower29 said, the media can drive up value even through possible awards mentions. I do think Marner is a key player to the future though. He's Kane without the cabby beating personality.

Also if Morgan Rielly comes anywhere close to winning an award this year with his point production he will wear the C next year. You can hear Matthews and Tavares always praising Rielly in interviews and how influential he is in the room. I think he's the compromise candidate who has actually earned the right to hold the C for the Leafs.

Although correct in regards to Gaudreau, when he’s playing with the no emotion Monahan and scoring machine Lindholm he’s a force on the Flames and seeing as at one time it was the only line with any offence I’ll give him some time to come around again. Shit look at Brodie for the last two years. Fuckin pylon but this year he’s been great.

It’s really concerning to see the Leafs come out flat a couple of games in a row and rely on heroics from the offence to pull out a win. That’s not a good tactic.

Yeah, I mean overall the Leafs had a good game but if they had of been able to force Buffalo onto the defensive right from the get go the game wouldn’t of been as close as it was. Bad starts have been a staple of the Leafs for far too long.

I'm not saying the ice was tilted, but Toronto had some excellent scoring chances...buffalo goalie was the star of that team. Kadri, ugh...great game to watch tho.

It was a pretty even game. If anything the Sabres carried the play a little more for large parts of the game. Sabres out shot the Leafs 41-30. Both teams played well. Both Mathews and Eichel responded with 2 goals each. Of course I was disappointed with the end, but that was a fun game to watch.

I actually saw a chart of stats comparing him and Kane for the first (however many NHL games Marner has) of their careers and it was almost identical in every stat. Impressive

Matthews is just a monster. That GWG last night was just Vintage Matthews goal. Funny to say that for a player so young, but he is amazing how he can quickly change the angle on a shot and just release with unreal quickness. It almost looks fake.

Good win for the Pens. Still not the complete game I was looking for but I'll take the win. Great job by Hornqvist on that Natty Hatty. Desmith was good too. And nice little tribute to Ian Cole, a player that I miss.

I'd say most of the shot differential came in the first, where the Leafs were outshot 14-7 by Buffalo. Slow start like I said. In the end the shots were 41-30 for Buffalo but the shot blocks were also 11-22, so the advanced stats look almost the same for both teams since the actual shots including blocks are exactly the same (~52-~52). Still, that's my point. If the Leafs had of come out firing early in the first the game would of been easier for Toronto. Slow starts are going to haunt this Toronto team if it keeps happening. Full credit to Buffalo for taking it to the Leafs right from the first whistle.

On that point though Andersen has been excellent. He didn't have his usual November slump this year and has been way more consistent that last year. He seems completely dialed in.
