Anyone care to comment on the Leafs paying a guy 7mil/yr and he has now played 17 games and has like 3pts? What is the buzz on that for ppl that follow the team?

Like I said, I'd rather have Jake G. He makes less with the new contract and has been a stud for us since day 1. Just interesting, since when contract talks were going, those were the 2 players I felt were similar, as far as skill / market etc.

Lots of thoughts. Really here's my take:
    1. He missed almost half a season. He wasn't NHL ready and it shows. This year is a write off for him so I won't judge his value based on this year. It would be pretty tough to say that Nylander has lost all that talent he showed last year. He needs coaching, NHL ice time, and some heart to work his way back. My hope is that by game 82 he's close to being back but even that might be a stretch.
    2. He is messing up the Leafs chemistry. Matthews was playing far better with Kapanen than he is with Nylander. If the Leafs made a change I would like to see Nylander dropped to the fourth line until he's in shape to play top 6 minutes. I do wonder if Babcock is limiting Kapanen's ice time in order to limit his resign in the future.
    3. The Guentzel/Nylander comparison doesn't make complete sense to me. I mean, yeah maybe Nylander is a watermark for Guentzel, or vice versa I don't care which way you look at it I think you'll get the point, in the same way McDavid will be a watermark for Matthews. My honest opinion is that they are somewhat similar players with far different surroundings and roles. Nylander is a first round pick that a lot of hockey experts have pegged as a potential long term HHOF player (not that I buy into that but you can bet his camp emphasized that) who played with a young non playoff team for most of his entry level deal. Guentzel is a third round pick who developed far past where he was expected to while on some of the best lines in hockey on one of the best teams in hockey. To me there are just too many dissimilarities between the two players and their surroundings for them to be used as a direct comparison. Trying to rate their skill, think about if they were switched. I'm not buying the production numbers stay even close to the same with those players roles and teams swapped.

and that's not to be insulting to Guentzel, I'm just not sold that they are the same type of player or that their situations even allow for a good direct comparison. I think Guentzel is a very good player in a great situation.

I'll also say the first time I read this post I thought you were saying you'd rather have Jake Gardiner (Jake G) over Nylander lol. Both of them are not performing for the Leafs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs don't offer Gardiner much of a contract this summer.

Ya after I wrote that, I thought about Gardiner lol. Oops lol.

And no, I totally see what you mean. And I think there is a lot of merit to that. I guess just earlier this year, I thought their output was similar and both guys are probably like the 4 or 5th best scorer on their team. So that was just why I threw those 2 names together at the start of this year. I projected Jake to get around what we gave him. And I did think Willie got a bit much, but I know we talked about that. There are for sure many angles to look at. I mean Kap and Sprong are guys who got a look here (albeit not as fair as I would've liked) and didn't seize the opportunity. But they seem to be playing well on their current teams. Jake was good from day 1 and produces everywhere we put him. He cashes in on every opportunity that he gets set up on, Sid a lot of them. You would think that is an easy job, but we have a history of trying to find ppl who can do that with Sid, and very few have been able to with any regularity. So it's tough to say what someone would do if roles are reversed etc. But I agree, it's hard to come in cold but it is surely a bad look. I still don't know if they want to trade him or use him long term? What is the word about that, around there?

A lot of the long term speculation has to do with what Marner wants. If the leaks are true, and Matthews is willing to take 11 million per if Marner will agree to 9 million per so they can both stay on the Leafs and try to go for a cup at some point, then I think ideally the Leafs hope that Nylander bounces back by playoffs and they keep all three of them in the long term. If they can't make the numbers work and Marner buys into what his dad was saying in the media, then the question becomes who is the odd man out of the core. I think that player is Nylander simply because he brings the least to the table. Personally, I think Matthews and Marner could be two of the best players in the NHL when they hit their primes. Nylander is more a question mark on how good he really is. Just based on that you trade the lowest guy that hurts you the least when you lose him, right? I think Kapanen has also sealed that fate. If the Leafs can get Kapanen to ink long term at a friendly cap hit to be Matthews go to winger then Nylander is even more expendable.

Ya that makes sense. Your numbers seem to be what I was expecting from those 2. I think trading Marner or Matthews would be terrible. As you said, those could be a Kane/Toews, Sid/Geno type of combo for years.

    LMAO.

Hard to argue with that after the last effort they put in. I know Gardiner is just the scapegoat but they need to consider all options when it comes to acquiring some better Defense first players on the backend.

Kings suck, everyone knows it but this is trash talk baby.

After watching quackers fans trashing the Kings early on in the season it's like eating Foie Gras every day with their epic slump.

It's almost as fun as watching Sharks fans when their team seems to be doing good and claiming " This is our year" every year only have a hard reality come crashing down on them again and again.

That was a great regular season win, in January. I liked this time when the Pens came to visit:
