Funny, this morning the stories are coming out that the Leafs were trying to include Zaitsev in a couple of trades they were sketching out before they pulled the trigger with LA. Keith from Chicago was apparently one but his contract going out until he's 40 and the Hawks demand for Kapanen was apparently too much.

The Ducks fans still think Gibson is a contender for the Vezina. They are minus 44.

Me knowing the Kings suck this year but also watching the Ducks in the standings.

 

Damn is this ever true. The leafs have been killing me since I was a kid. From Clark toGilmour to Sundin an on to this current group. I hope they prove me wrong

Gibson was the Vezina front-runner at the halfway point. That is with a team in front of him that usually looks like they'd rather be doing something else, aside from playing hockey.

 

Matthews $11.7M / 5yr deal

 

Gibson last 4 games:
~Got pulled after giving up 5 vs. STL.
~Let in 7 goals on 9 shots in the All-star game.
~Next game vs. Winnipeg lets in 6 goals on 14 shots in the 1st period. Thought he was going to go full Patrick Roy after that.
~Lit up for 5 again and pulled vs. Toronto.

Also should mention the Ducks had a 4 on 1 break vs. the Jets and didn't register a shot attempt.

 

So projected cap space of 13 million for next year to sign Marner, about 5 roster players, and Sparks. Yikes, that's tight. Zaitsev is going to have to go and even then things are tighter than a virgin. The Leafs will need a healthy cap increase, which I don't think will happen, and a lot of luck to make that work. I was hoping for closer to 10-11 million cap hit.

 

The one thing I saw was that if they locked him up at the full term (8yr) then he was projected even higher AAV. So this 'saves the Leafs some Cap hit' but in turn puts Matthews unrestricted earlier than they would have wanted. So they can do what they need to do now and then decide to extend him for even more later (or let him walk)

 

Hopefully they get more than 70 games a year out of him for that price.
