NHLPA board voting on 24-team, conference-based playoff format

 

Hey everybody gets to play

 

As a red wings fan, I think every team should automatically qualify for the playoffs haha

 

Under the proposal, the following match-ups will occur:

Eastern Conference

Pittsburgh (5) vs. Montreal (12) — winner plays the No. 4 seed.

Carolina (6) vs. N.Y. Rangers (11) — winner plays the No. 3 seed

NY Islanders (7) vs. Florida (10) — winner plays the No. 2 seed

Toronto (8) vs. Columbus (9) — winner plays the No. 1 seed

Western Conference

Edmonton (5) vs. Chicago (12) — winner plays the No. 4 seed.

Nashville (6) vs. Arizona (11) — winner plays the No. 3 seed.

Vancouver (7) vs. Minnesota (10) — winner plays the No. 2 seed.

Calgary (8) vs. Winnipeg (9) — winner plays the No. 1 seed.

According to reports, the top four seeds won’t be sitting around and waiting to see who they play next. Instead, they will play each other in a round-robin format designed as a warm-up. It is unclear whether this round robin would affect the seeding of those teams, but it’s an idea.

 

I like the format, just too bad it didn't work out any big rivals like EDM-CAL or PIT-PHI are going head to head in round 1.

 

This format doesn't help teams that didn't play as many games. Ill be the first to admit Buffalo is not a great team, but Montreal makes the playoffs over Buffalo because they are 3 pts ahead of them but have played 2 more games. Cant catch a break even with 24 teams making the playoffs.

 

They're using points percentage based on what I've seen. So Buffalo would be out either way.

 

How so?

 

Well if Buffalo played two more games and won them they would be ahead of Montreal. I know its a big if, but its not an even format if teams haven't played the same amount of games.

Not based on their points percentage. They’ve averaged less than a point per game, so two more games would not get them three more points, on average.

You can’t just assume that every game they play to get even in games played would be a win

 

Math is hard

 

I’m good with this format. It will be an interesting playoffs

 

So with this format - do we get refunded for the balance of our regular season tickets?

 

Regardless this years winner will always have the corona virus * next to it and will never be seen as fully earned like past regular season champs.

IKR ... at least have a cali playoff to see who is top turd in the toilet.

Up too late thinking about it. The Draft lottery odds came out today. It's going to be crap. they should have kept the Lottery to the 7 teams that wont let play anymore.

The problem I see with it is the second tear will know the odds of picking a #1 #2 #3 or multiple of above before they even start playing. If the bottom 7 win all three then play on, but if "the pool" gets one or more of the top 3 the tankathon is on. The odds are better than it looks at first. The combined odds for A-H are 24.5% meaning there is a 1 in 4 chance for each of the lottery balls. That's better than any of the individual bottom 7 chances. If one or more of the top 3 picks end up in the pool each of the A-H teams have a 12.5% chance if only 1 makes it. Even better odds if more than one make it in the pool. those are better odds than all but Detroit or Ottawa.

The best part is they will know this before they even play a game.
