Plane crash in Russia involves KHL team

The Associated Press is reporting 36 people have died in a plane crash near the city of Yaroslavl in Central Russia. The majority of victims are believed to be members of the Kontinental Hockey League club, Lokomotiv.

According to aviation officials, one passenger survived the crash, but is in critical condition.

According to the reports, the plane, a Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger jet, went down and caught fire shortly after taking to the air, crashing less than 2 kilometers from the airport.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the plane crashed immediately after taking off from an airport near the city on the Volga River, which is approximately 150 miles northeast of Moscow.

The Yak-42, a 120-person capacity passenger jet, was on its way to the Belarusian capital Minsk and had 37 people on board, aviation authorities reported.

Lokomotiv was scheduled to play Dynamo Minsk on Thursday, according to the KHL website.

The KHL season opened Wednesday with a game bewtween Ufa and Atalant. The game was stopped once news of the tragedy broke and will not be restarted.

Someone forwarded this to me today. A totally different, but personal, perspective on the plane crash.

 

Yeah RIP to all, especially Skrastins, he was a pretty good defenseman. It really has been a bad year for hockey.

 

RIP Ruslan Salei and everyone else involved. Glad I got home opener tickets already.

Nice post!! I saw the Dynamo play at the Capital Center a long time ago.

 

Didn't get a chance to post this earlier here but RIP to all of those affected by the crash, and to all the players, mainly Pavol and Ruslan. RIP Pavol, it was a shock hearing the news, you were a great player and a great King.
