I think the enforcer role is pretty important

i agree but it should become less relevant if they start cracking down even more this year. they have no choice with these possible head injury related suicides

Even the NHL has stated they are not willing to link the three deaths to their role on the ice .

I think that the NHL has already moved away from the days of a dedicated enforcer or goon , now even the goon needs to be able to take a somewhat regular shift

the NHL wont publicly acknowledge this but a friend who was at the NHLPA meets tells me otherwise, they are worried about it and will handle it internally im sure, one way is stiffer suspensions. you wouldnt believe the money these guys lose when they are suspended, the fines are maxed at like $2500 or something like that. the big hit in the wallet is the forking over of the pay checks. if someone makes a million a year and gets a 10 game suspension, and those 10 games are spread over a month, thats over $100k lost. the fact that there are so many repeat offenders is amazing to me

your right about the NHL moving away from the goon role, if you cant skate you wont play. even if its 6-8 minutes a game, you cant be a liability and if given the chance, you need to be able to get the puck in the net. there are a few guys left who are still goon-like, Shelly is one of them, he has improved his game but its not great, hes more of a 4 minute a game guy.

With the new NHL you have to get a 4th line guy with some hands that's willing to drop the mits when the time is right. Shawn Thornton comes to mind (I'm a shameless homer - sorry)

It's hard to give up a roster spot on the bench for a plug that'll get 2min ice time a game these days

my best guess would be that it had something to do with Duco chirping with Getzlaf in the box after their fight. but WTF indeed, Jacques should get suspended for that.

Save the shit talking for the regular season .

We had 5 guys from our NHL roster and a bunch of minor leaugers against the Shark's starting line up .
