Pens did have some shitty yrs, but in all honestly why would continue to waste your $$$ and watch crap? Its like ppl that only buy Ford even though it breaks down all the time. The Pirates have sucked for 20 yrs, if they put a team together PNC park would be packed every night.

Big differences between Quebec city and Seattle. Market size, potential fan base, 485 million dollar arena deal in place. Plus they are really excited about a Vancouver/Seattle rivalry.

All you have to do is look at the Sounders in MLS. Seattle has set attendance records every year and has sold out every season ticket since the inaugural season.

Studies/Polls show their is an even bigger fan base for NHL waiting to be tapped.

I think the oilers will win a cup. They are following Pittsburghs path. Pitt drafted malkin, crosby, and fleury after years of being bottom feeders and now edmonton has drafted hall and nugent-hopkins. Cups will bring in fans. My Bruins season tickets were $37 face value for second row of the balcony, now it costs at least $100 to get in the building.

Bring in fans ? The building is sold out every night now .

    $37 ? Holy crap that's cheap , even $100 is cheap . Vancouver tickets are $150-$275

potential fan base doesn't really mean anything, both atlanta and phoenix had/have bigger potential fan bases than seattle.
below is a link to an article which says that last season 33% of league revenue came from the 6 Canadian teams (20% of the league).

Always? Didn't Winnipeg and Quebec already lose teams before and Ottawa was on IOU's a few yrs ago?

If the NHL wants to move teams they need to go to places where fans are familar with the sport and fans will want to spend their time in rinks in the winter. Teams in Canada and the North East will always do well cuz there isnt shit to do in the winter. If I lived in PHX I probaly wouldn't want to spend too much winter time indoors. Same with FLA, most people probaly would agree. For a US market I've heard Seattle, Portland Salt Lake, could all do well and have a strong fan support. There isn't too much competition for sports and the cities arent as sprawled out as ATL or Dallas. I live in ATL now and it absolutly sucked getting into the city to see the Thrash.

For Canada I dont think most ppl in the US realize how big the Toronto metro area is. I think Mississagua has more ppl than Pitt. They could support another team and I would love to see the Nordiques back.

I agree that the oilers dont need fans. I am just saying it will be even harder and more expensive to go once they win. Which will cause the team to stay put.

    I miss this view

There's no comparison to be drawn between Seattle and those cities. Phoenix is filled with a bunch of retirees. Atlanta and Dallas are in the south where you compete against Nascar. Nascar wouldn't work in Seattle. Hockey does, and would. The Local minor league teams all do very well attendance and support wise. The people in the south are very different than Seattle-ites.

The NHL business model is broken, terribly, they never should have tried hockey in the deep south. They would be foolish to compare NHL teams performance there to the possibility of a team in Seattle.

Edm tickets are $60 (3rd tier, can't even see the scoreboard) to $290.
Wpg tickets are $60 to $200
Cgy tickets are $50 to $365

Yes the Canadian economy is doing ok now and ppl are spending money there do it makes sense. Things slowed down in the US right now. Does it make sense to start shuffleing teams everytime the market stalls out a bit?

Atlanta and Phoenix were retarded, yes. Quebec city will be a stinker too, but Seattle cannot be compared to coyotes and hotlanta

We overtook Phoenix a year or so ago and are expected to catch Atlanta soon.

Again tho, it doesn't matter. You can't compare winter activities of Phoenix/Atlanta to Seattle. The country is the same, I get it. But the people are different. We're much more closely tied to Vancouver BC than to LA or Phoenix.

That was before the NHL had a mechanism in place to deal with discrepencies in the two currencies and revenue sharing throughout the league .

At that time the Canadian dollar dropped to about .65 USD . That is unlikely to occur again for the forseeable future .

Minnesota (moved to Dallas), Colorado (moved to NJ), and Atlanta (moved to Calgary) have all lost their NHL team and then got a team back. if you go back far enough the penguins aren't even the first NHL franchise in Pittsburgh.
