So I have a good story about Mario Lemieux.

So back in 1986 they had the All Star game here in Calgary and I am not sure if it was his first or second All Star appearance but he was here.

A friend of mine found out the hotel the players were all staying at and went down to get some autographs. He had gone down at 3:00am because he did not want to miss anyone. Mario was the first one to come down at about 5:00 am. So my friend asked him as he came off the elevator if he could get his autograph. Mario signed whatever it was he had and then proceeded into the lobby.

Mario had acquired a paper and sat down in the lobby. After a few minutes he noticed my friend was still waiting by the elevator for more players to come down. Mario got up went over to him and said " Hey are you waiting for the other guys to come down?" to which my friend repied "Yes."

Mario said "I get up way earlier then everyone else and those other guys will probably not be down for awhile. Why don't you come sit down with me in the lobby and we can talk hockey."

Well my friend was abviously excited and he ended up talking to Mario for about 2 1/2 hours. Not only that but every guy that came down off the elevator Mario would flag them down and get them to sign what ever my friend had for them to sign.

Just thought I would share how not only a great player but a great guy Mario is.

That's an awesome story! He def is a class act all round. One of the classiest guys in all of sports and one hell of a business man.

I dont know where I read this, but there was a story about how hard players train now and how strict their diets are. They asked Lemieux how he trained in the off season. He said nothign really just quit eating french fries a few weeks before teh season starts.

I dont know why but it doesn't seem like Canadians give Lemieux the same respect as other greats? Is this true OZ?

Yeah he is a real classy guy for sure.

I can not speak for the other Canucks on here but I played with a few guys who went on to play in the NHL and through them had the oppprtunity to play with others in the NHL during the summer months. Most of those guys think that Mario was the most talented player they ever played against and that includes the likes of Wayne Gretzky.

I was at Lemieux's 2nd comeback game in 2000. Jagr set him up down the slot....Best sporting event of my life! The place exploded! Lemieux only played like 40 some games that season yet still had 76 pts. UFB!

Lemieux is well respected by Canadians in my opinion .

How did you form your observation that he was not ? From NBC Sports ?

No, I never hear of Canadians talk much about him, he wasnt at the Olympics, It seems like he has distanced himself from Canada as well. Just my observations. Of all the great Pittsburgh sports figures in history I think he has done way more for the community than anyone. He finds ways to sell anything to benefit his foundation.

He didn't play in a Canadian market but besides that he is well respected and one of the best hockey players to ever lace up the skates.

You monitor a lot of Canadian media to figure out we never talk about him ?

Like many great NHL players he is giving back to the community / market he played in , not too suprising

Oh and BTW, the stadium in the announcer that had called the games forever, you can hear him say Lemieuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu in the video I posted. Around the time when the Pens won the cup a few yrs ago that announcer was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and Lemieux pulled some strings to get him a cup ring before he died. Class act! I miss that accouncer.

No just some Canadians in my family, they kinda shrug off his talents. They live in Detroit btw and are Wings fans now. That and he wasnt part of any of the Olympics but Steve Nash, Gretzky, ect were. Im not pointing my opinions just curious thats all.
