My opinion? Maybe given the purpose of the review was to stop grossly missed offsides the challenge should be removed and Toronto should just review all scoring plays. IE the call on the ice stands unless it’s a scoring play that TO seems offside.

The point of this review system was never to nitpick offsides down to the level it’s at now.

I think for sure that the challenge was to get rid of very obvious offsides calls and not guys who are dragging their skates and barely lifted before the puck carrier. Regardless, it still is to the point where we are using a microscope on guys as they cross the line, with a penalty looming if your challenge is not successful. I'm ok with that, overall. But by the same token, the whole 'possession' thing doesn't make sense to me. The Pens/Sabres (pictured above) and I went back and watched the Sharks from the other night. That shouldn't be considered onsides. That would be like when you are holding the zone and it goes outside the blueline, but your body is in...still offsides, as it should be. So you shouldn't be ok with guys entering the zone ahead of the puck 'possession ' or not. Agree?

I actually strongly disagree. I grew up as a teenager calling the old offside rule that was written that way and it resulted in a lot of nice passes at the blue line ending up offside as the puck carrier may bring in the puck behind or beside him as he turns and it slowed down the game significantly. I get it that my perspective is different since I lines some good hockey and like the current rule, but I also understand the frustration with the grey area it creates when it’s under the microscope. I’ve always wondered how the game would look without offsides... I kind of like that idea, or maybe a rule where a new version of the two line pass is created using the red line and the defending teams blue line but offsides are gone.

That is somewhat my point though. Maybe I didn't explain it well enough. I think they are negating some really good plays/goals by looking at millimeter skates off of the ice on (what I would call 'normal') offsides calls. But in another instance, guys are getting their whole body into the zone and half-ass 'possessing' the puck /dragging it over the line behind them and that is being called ok. To me, you can't have any level of consistency that makes sense if a league calls 1 of those instances offsides (and the naked eye can't even tell) but then call a guy onsides in a possession circumstance. Looking at the pic I posted above, or even if someone has a freeze-frame of Couture entering the zone, everyone in the arena can see his body if clearly offsides, but since they determine 'possession' then it is ok. That makes 0 sense to me. If you are gonna let guys drag the puck behind them, then don't call back goals where you need 27 different replays to see if a guys skate lifted before the puck carrier. But if you are going to micromanage, then you gotta put something in place to curb the possession nonsense. Too much gray area there. Make it clear cut offsides and eliminate any gray area.

This reminds me of a tourney I reffed this weekend where a coach got into a heated discussion with me because he thought with a delayed penalty in the air that the play should of been blown down when one of his players deflected a shot. There is supposed to be a difference between puck procession and contact which is a big part of what the NHL is messing up and what’s arguably causing frustration. A tighter definition or explanation of control in the rule book would help.

You also don’t need the skate blade touching the ice, just any part of the boot. They made that change years ago IIRC. I’ve joked before the equipment makers should design a skate with a small spring loaded drag piece lol.

I'm sure he was trying to work you a bit, as to be expected. But ya, I would not consider that possession, by any means either.

Which reminds me, if you happened to watch that 'Wired' Stadium Series on NBCSN or youtube, it is pretty funny. Some good soundbites from both coaches/players and the refs. I feel like you being on the other side of things would appreciate that.

Yeah I’ve watched a lot of those videos. Definately funny stuff but the guys at that level get a little bit cringe worthy sometimes lol.

Who was the SJ player who got hurt? Couldn't see the number from my seat but looked like he couldn't put any weight on his leg at all.

Yeah. Goaltending is pretty key lol. If it comes apart on the Leafs they're in trouble.

Probably not a major concern. I did think the 1 goal was hilarious when all of the Leafs were on the right side of the ice and the puck came loose and was passed across to a guy wide open on the doorstep. I've seen peewee teams with better d-zone coverage. So not sure what was up w/ that.
