Win the Cup and we will talk. Don't be Nashville and celebrate the President's Trophy while another team raises the Cup banner. But if things keep going the way they are and they do win the Cup, then yes, maybe. Team is stacked.

Didn't I get banned for this opinion? :p

As for the Lightning, they better win this year. Point is going to be tough guy to resign for less than 9 million Unless Tampa is going to let most of the rest of their RFAs and UFAs walk while filling their positions with AHL caliber players, I can't see him being a member of the Lightning next year. He's going to ask for whatever Marner gets and he's worth it or more.

A part of me wants to see them play the Habs and then get stoned by Price. I believe a couple of presidents trophy winners have been eliminated by the Habs that way.

Here is some factual information regarding Point. He ain't going anywhere.

Another team likely won’t steal him away with an offer sheet. The Lightning can match any offer that another team would make to him because he is a restricted free agent. “I’m not concerned at all about offer sheets,” BriseBois said. “The way it’s set up, there’s no point in making an offer sheet if you’re not going to get the player. And teams match, you’re not going to let go of these good young players that can be good for your team for many, many years to come.”

I completely agree that Tampa will match any offer sheet if one came. It would be crazy for most teams to offer four first round picks for Point. What I see happening is one of two scenarios. One, Point holds out for 9 million plus and ends up pulling a William Nylander. Two, Point signs for 7 million plus in the off season and either Tampa fits him in by sacrificing their bottom six forwards and bottom two defense men in some fashion or they trade him for picks to keep their run as a cup challenger up for longer.

You don't actually see Point signing for less than 7 million do you? I can maybe see that number because I get the impression he's very happy in Tampa, but any less and he's leaving tons of money on the table. With about 1.5 million in cap space anticipated on the Lightning against the cap after resigning FAs and filling roles, plus maybe a 2 million cap limit raise, that's probably 5 million or more to trim down off the team to fit under the cap. Tough to do IMHO.

Plus Tampa would be just fine without Point but maybe not a record setting team. They could likely benefit from trading him if holding onto him isn't possible without gutting the team.

That didn't answer the question though. That's like me saying that the Leafs can hold onto Marner, Nylander, Matthews, and Tavares forever. I know at some point likely someone has to go or the Leafs aren't going to have any cash leftover for a team. Maybe Point stays but then something else has to give. I just don't see Point accepting half what he's worth to be a Bolt.

Gourde's contract kicks in next year, you just signed Tyler Johnson to a 5mil/yr deal and I think a few of the defensemen are up. Then add in whatever Point will get. I honestly do not understand how they will do all of that and keep the team as deep as it is. Doesn't seem possible w/o moving some parts. And even if so, they will still be good, but this year does seem like the best chance as far as deepest roster.

Exactly. Not that they're going to tank, but this will probably be the best roster they can ice for a long time.

Let's see them win a few cups before we give them that term. The Oilers of the 80's have only a few cups on them still lol.

Don't even bring the word 'dynasty' into this thread lol. All it takes is going back a couple years and all of the Oilers fans claiming dynasty after winning a playoff series and McDavid stacking points. But here we are and they suck and he plays pick-up hockey and stat-pads at garbage time and not a peep about that anymore. Granted the Oiler dudes in this thread are good guys but just making a point.

I can't stress enough that the regular season domination means little. Even my team with their best team and reg season performance (93) ended up w/ no Cup. And no one in Pittsburgh cares about that season now, because you have 5 Cups and I honestly don't even remember the specifics of our regular season play. The Cup is all that matters.

Nice, you got to see LA's sloppy seconds with Granato, McSorely and Hrudey, not to mention the R.S. of 14 ... congrats
