Hey, HL is one of the cancer's with a great prognosis for long term disease-free survival (they don't use the word cure very often for liability reasons). You'll see the terms Overall Survival, Disease Free Survival, Progression Free Survival, etc. They are all metrics of how long you can go without disease and/or needing additional therapy. Either way, long term outlook is good. I have a friend who was diagnosed 24 years ago with HL and is fine and dandy now.

I work in the world of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL) and I can tell you that there are some wicked chemo's out there. If you have an option to stay away from Doxorubicin (aka Adriamycin), think really hard about it. It can cause some toxicity that can be long-term and debilitating. There is a trend in NHL treatment to go away from using combination chemos that contain adriamycin because of the toxicity and it has not shown to improve outcomes. Just something to think about, but definitely consult with your physician and do your own research.

As great as doctors and nurses are, no one is going to have as much vested interest in your health as YOU DO, so you have to be your own advocate. Be informed and be involved! Good luck.

Unfortunately I am on Adriamycin. I have a 24hr infusion every other week with Adriamycin and Bleomycin, and 2.5 hr infusion of the other 2 agents.

Hey sorry about the late response, but if you're on Adriamycin, must be a great choice for you. I'm not a physician, but work more closely with research. Also, I'm also not as familiar with HL regimens as I am with Non-HL. Anyway, as I stated in my previous response...just make sure you stay informed and involved. You have to be your own advocate. Ask TONS of questions and don't hesitate to bring up any topic with your clinical team. Remember, they are working for you...they are your being paid by you and your insurance, so feel bad about taking up their time with questions or concerns.

There is a great set of guidelines that physicians go by called the NCCN guidelines. If you have any questions about their treatment approaches, you can consult the guidelines and compare it to the "standard of care". Also, a great resource for ongoing clinical trials is www.clinicaltrials.gov. You can search for trials that may be available in your area. You will never get any treatment that is less than "standard of care", so trials are a great way to seek therapy and often save money (if thats a concern), because they will often provide free medication and support.

I wish you the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers.
