Holcomb Valley is definitely a fun place to explore. If you can't find anyone to go with you, you can still do it solo without having much, if any trouble. Coxey Road is another good one to check out. I like to take Coxey Road from Apple Valley to Big Bear, explore the Holcomb Valley area then take 2N02 down to Pioneertown and eat at Pappy & Harriet's. Depending on where you're coming from, you could also do that backwards.

How’s that trail, easy, hard? I did a quick search and some said easy, some said hard.

Cleghorn is easy and the main trail can be done without even needing 4x4. There are offshoots that branch off the main trail that are difficult and will most definitely require 4x4.

I would be very wary of going up to Big Bear this weekend, gonna be nuts with the crowds of people with 3 day weekends and all the fresh snow. Sucks it had to happen over this week and not next week

Depends on the road conditions and what "good" tires you have. The route itself is very mild (fire road) and shouldn't be an issue but the snow can through out a lot of additional challenges. I would think you'd be fine if you have another truck or winch just in case.

I was at holcomb earlier today for day camping with my little ones. On my way down, a bone stock Subaru forester behind me made it with no issue.

Did holcomb yesterday from Fawnskin, usually a super easy trail even in the snow, I've done it quite a bit but yesterday was no joke, we had to back down half a mile to get turned around. Definitely don't wheel solo in big bear right now...the snowcat was the only other vehicle on the trail

Yeah with all the snow this storm brought I can imagine even the fire roads are tough in some areas. I'm headed up there tomorrow with @DarthPow , we're starting in Hesperia and taking Coxey up into Big Bear to Holcomb Valley Rd. In years past after heavy snow I've had some trouble in spots on the Green Valley side of Holcomb Valley. Lot of shaded mountain sides of the trail that way where the sun doesn't hit much so the snow stays deep and icy for a long time.

i have ptsd from last year. started at polique canyon and ended by the dump took like 12 hours and ended in the dark. tons and tons of vehicles that should have never been there. nothing you can do when they are blocking the road and falling off the cliff lol.

Haha no it was fun, we took Coxey on up into Fawnskin. Surprisingly there really wasn't much snow at all until Big Pine flats, then into Fawnskin it started getting substantial. But very little on the high desert side of the mountain. Lot of mud though. Saw a Tundra looked like it had stalled out in a giant pool of melted snow/mud, may have hydrolocked. He was getting recovered when we passed him by.

We opted to take the highway down from Fawnskin, had my 2 year old with me and she needed a break from the bumpy trail. That proved to be a fateful error. Think we sat in bumper to bumper traffic going down for 3 hours just to get to the 210

Anyone going up tomorrow - take the trails up and down, avoid the highway at all cost. The 38 is closed so traffic on the other 2 routes is worse than usual

Haha yea we did. Was it a tundra? I thought I saw a Ram getting pulled back. Or was he the one pulling? Eh whatever, either way i hope the trucks ok.

Yea, sitting in traffic sucked, but it was best for us too, my wife is pregnant, and the jostling and bumping was making her cramps a lot worse. So it was better for us to be on pavement, even if it meant sitting in traffic. To her credit, she toughed it out like a champ.

I'd love to go up again, but can't tomorrow.

I think my advice if you go tomorrow would get up there early as fuck (like be at the Green Valley trailhead by like 8 am), start from Green Valley, and then exit down Coxey, and come home via the 15/Cajon. It'll be an absolute madhouse trying to come down the 18/330 once everyone checks out of their hotels and cabins.
