And it works great, it's just that some people are too fucking stupid to step on the skinny pedal when they want more power

Guys who are OV tuned seem very happy with them. I hear the MT has better gearing for them as well. I have no experience with it.

Some comments indicate the it needs to be revved high to make power, which would be a put-off for me. I would prefer a hybrid or turbo setup if that's accurate. Or a 1GR with a 6 or 8 speed and better gearing, but that's obviously not happening.

I'm happy with what I have now, though. No problem turning 295's.

I just read about it and this is what I derived:
Atkinson cycle leaves exhaust timing on longer. How that is done does not matter. The Toyota does it with variable valve timing instead of mechanical setup. It's still atkinson cycle, as cycle is independent of how it is achieved. so What this does allow this engine to do is to go to otto cycle when it needs to and atkinson cycle when it needs to. Which a mechanically designed atkinson cycle engine cannot do. So I disagree that it is a fake cycle. The cycle is atkinson and that is not fake. Regardless, it is a more efficient engine. It obviously produces decent power.

I hear mixed reviews about the power. I get the impression it doesn't have much low end torque. But, it sounds like tuning helps.

Either way, hopefully it will be phased out soon enough. I'd personally take a hybrid or turbo 4 cylinder a million times over that motor.

They have been putting V8's in the IS-F and RC-F for years, among other models. I do wonder if they'll switch over to a boosted 6 eventually. :notsure:

I think they're being phased out in anything besides novelty vehicles, or sports cars. We all know they're never putting one in the Tacoma. That's all I'm saying.

Just so nobody needs to mention any particular car, here's a list of vehicles Toyota will sell in North America with a V8 in 2021:

    Tundra (4.6L, 5.7L)
    Sequoia (5.7L)
    Land Cruiser (5.7L)
    IS 500 (5.0L; Fall 2021)
    GX 460 (4.6L)
    LX 570 (5.7L)
    RC F (5.0L)
    LC 500 (5.0L)

I didn't mean they are going away just not going to be used as often and phased out.

The fact its 14% more efficient, means it's likely here to stay and I guess it will be coming with twin turbos, which is amazing. If you study the design, there are actually lots of advantages to it over the std design. I actually like it. Think about this, the upgraded coil packs for this engine give it about 10-14% more power across the entire rpm band. I have deal with coil packs in high performance applications and I have never seen gains like that, not even in my modded 800hp 911. It was one of my first mods and I gained imperceptible hp. This v6 with it's ability to vary timing and compression, gives it the ability to actually increase compression when conditions are more efficient, like high energy coil packs. The result is even more power.

I'm skeptical, but I did find this "error" on toyota's Instagram ad yesterday. Irony or ...?

So, according to your post, the coil packs are what gives it more power? Why not just put those coil packs on a better motor?

I'm glad you like it, but I think it will be replaced by a hybrid setup in the next Tacoma.

Honestly, I don't really care because I drive a 4runner. I just hope they put a hybrid in the 4runner instead of that motor. I'd rather see the 4.0 back with a new transmission.

Because coil packs do not give that much more power in std otto cycle engines, that is what I wrote above. I have used high enery packs several times and gained mileage but almost no gain in power. The atkinson cycle actually enhances the improvement

I agree on the hybrid. It will come for sure. 4 liter will not be comming back unfortunately, but I see your point. Funny that if this atkinson 3.5, was increased to 4L, it would be putting out 318bhp and 302 ftlbs of torque. A lot more than the old 4l

I'm shocked that the 4R doesn't already have a hybrid option.

That is interesting. But, doesn't it go into Otto cycle at WOT? I would think it would advance the timing to make more power.

The 3.5 makes enough power. I just get the impression that it doesn't have much grunt in the low RPM's, which is what I like in a truck motor.

The 4.0 is no powerhouse, but makes a decent amount of torque by 2K RPM's. It's still not as nice as the 4.7 in my '03, though.

A hybrid seems ideal to me because of the torque of the electric motor.

Toyota really rode out the 5th gen. They probably realize that many of the folks buying 4runners actually prefer old proven technology. And, the rest don't seem to care.

I plan on driving mine into the ground, so it doesn't matter to me right now. But, I sure wouldn't complain about a bit more torque and better fuel economy.

That engine isn't fitting in a Tacoma. Also thats not a verified IG account like the real one is. Can you post the link?
