It's not just Toyota. All of the car manufacturers BUY their paint from only a handful of paint manufacturers. I don't know why, but white seems to peel more often than other colors. And that includes just about every manufacturer and it has been that way for decades.

My 2007 is peeling bad in places. I've seen white vehicles made by just about every manufacturer peeling going back to the 90's. I taped off about 8" on the front of the hood and repainted with white FlexSeal. The color isn't a perfect match and the FlexSeal has a texture to it. But it sure looks better than the gray primer on the hood and cost me $14 for a can of paint.

My 1gen has single stage white paint so no clearcoat damage from the jets. The shell has (had) a clearcoat and it initially peeled off in stripes that correspond to the location of the jets at the car wash i frequented.

"When it comes to solid white paint that is most commonly used on trucks or commercial vehicles, it is possible that these will not have a clear coat on them." What I found. That's why it chips and flakes earlier that other paints. I agree it's not a mfr thing, but a paint thing. For future I will no longer be buying cars/trucks with white paint.

An alternative way to think about it is the clear coat is often weaker than polyurethane single stage paint. Look at 1gen Tacomas: Nearly any with original 2-stage paint have a failed clear coat, starting with the hood and roof from direct sun and gas station pressure washer nozzles. However the 1gen white ones (single stage, no clear coat) with original paint look a lot better.

I run white color to avoid the clear coat which is much harder to maintain/repair once chipped or starting to fail. You can fill/sand the chips without clear coat matching and inevitable peeling.

If this ever goes into a class action lawsuit, the lawyers will get paid big $$$ and you’ll get a check for $100… if you’re lucky.

Have you missed this mega thread?

Post 317 might be of interest to you.

For folks in here talking about other colors, are you speaking of clear coat failure, or is the base coat releasing, exposing the primer? That's what's happening on the whites.

Clear coat and base coat failures are quite different. Unfortunately odds of getting remedy from any OE on a clear coat failure after body warranty expires is virtually nil.
