I've got to replace the front bearings, the hub assembly comes with a hole for the front axle. As I've not converted to 4x4 yet, I'd like to plug the hole to keep water out of the bearings.

    What's the solution? Silicone?

The front hub assembly is designed to be kept together with the CV axle stub.

In other words, using a 4wd front hub assembly without the CV will eventually catastrophically fail.

    It's wrong and will fail.

You need a CV axle stub end to keep the bearing held together.

Order a couple of cheap cv axles or buy a pair from a local parts store that you can take apart and throw the axle stub in.

Your using the wrong hubs !!

If you want to use these hubs time to bolt that front axle in.

Like others have said, you need to use the PreRunner hubs if you aren’t running a CV axle.
Depending on when you plan to to the conversion, you might get some cheap SKP assemblies to hold you over. You might get 15k-30k miles out of them……maybe?

The hub is not cut for an axle it has a hole with no teeth cut. This is the pre runner part according to the computer.

I see what's going on. The OEM PreRunner hub has a metal dust cap over the hole. Some aftermarket hubs like this Moog are made the same way:

    upload_2023-9-4_17-31-27.png

Some aftermarket hubs (like this FVP WH95004) lack the dust cap:

You can try punching out the dust cap from your old hub and re-using them. Or go to your nearest auto parts store and find a plastic cap that'll fit in the hole.

Another solution is to get the "grease cap" used on 4WD trucks, P/N 43514-28010. This fits in the larger lip of the wheel hub register: https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota....-bearing-dust-cap-left-right-front-4351428010

I'm obviously confused by the questions.

The Grease Retaining Cap is pressed into the Steering Knuckle, not the hub.

The 4 wheel drive has a seal in the place of this grease retaining cap on the steering knuckle.

Then the hub (4 WD OR PreRunner Not interchangeable) is installed into the Steering Knuckle.

    4 Wheel Drive

Backside of the PreRunner Front Hub Assembly.

    4 Wheel Drive Hub Assembly.

The Prerunner Hub has a Threaded portion coming out the rear for the spanner nut to screw onto to retain the bearing assembly.

The 4 WD Hub has Splines inside for the axle shaft where the PreRunner Hub does not have splines.

I'm confused on whether OP has a 2wd or 4wd hub assembly.

So what holes do you have in your hub/wheel bearing assembly that needs covering? The outer hub surface should be fully covered and the inner should be covered by a grease cap on your spindle (as shown above in @Jimmyh post of the parts breakdown) assuming you still have 2wd spindles.

Here's the outer surface of a typical 2wd hub assembly.

The hub does not have the hole plugged.

Dead centre of the hub there's a smooth hole.

note my verbiage I've not mentioned the spindle only the hub.
