I've never done HITR trail, but I believe it's an out and back trail...so you could try to go as far as you dare. However, it's a pretty remote area & I don't think it's recommended to go solo. I think everything else they did is doable, except the north rim might still have snow in the spring. Alstrom point is highly recommended!

I would not recommend HITR trail solo. Quite technical and very remote. 30+ mile out and back.

I also think sliders and 33s should be the minimum. You could probably get through on 31s, but it would be difficult to say the least.

I have the CBI 3/8th front ifs skid and their transmission skid. I thought for some reason that it was a connector trail from like Mexican Hat up to Halls but after further research I was wrong. I have a pretty sweet line up so far so I do not think that I will be needing to add another 30+ trail miles to my trip unless It is something I could work into my already massive loop. Thanks for the replies. One day I hope to make it out there it looks amazing, I will be making it up on smoky mountain / alstrom so thank you for the inspiration!

There's different sections of Hole in the Rock that are referred to by different names.

We did Hole in the Rock Trail (although the start of that is a bypass to the original route). This is the technical section on the east side of the lake.

We also did Hole in the Rock Road, which is just a dirt road for the most part on the west side.

I don't know anything about the section east of HITR Trail. The original road went to Bluff, not sure if it's driveable or not.

Yeah I have spent a healthy amount of time west of the lake on HITR road by escalante just nothing east of the lake. I am going be doing some back packing on Cedar Mesa, by Mexican Hat and Bluff and I wanted to find another way to make it across the lake instead of 95 up to hanksville/capitol reef. Obviously need to do more research...

There's parts of the Mormon trail that head east from HITR that you can explore and are on the easier side.. there's a famous hill that the name slips my mind, not far from the airport on the Mormon trail.

There's multiple branches to explore surrounding the dark canyon and in the manti la Sal NF by natural bridges NP.

You can loop cedar mesa around valley of the gods with the moki dugway

There's not many options to get across the river down there... ferry at halls, bridge at hite or head down to page.

What about the giant cliffs on either side? Gonna winch down Hole in the Rock?

Need to get it done before you amass more pictures on our next trip...

Spent a week plus, solo, in southern utah last may- stock taco. Only advice is to pay attention to rain/snow reports. Just about became a permanent resident trying to cut across from burr trail rd, east, to star springs campground. Dirt roads turned into this gray, greasy mush i've never seen before. Had to tuck tail and backtrack 10 miles or so. I was warned but didn't heed. Beautiful country though.

OK, where in the hell is HITR Trail? I’m looking in the Utah Road and Recreation Atlas, and I can’t find anything by that name. I see HITR Road, which leads to Hole-in-the-Rock. I see a trail on the other side that is called Emigrant Trail, which is on the opposite side of Lake Powel, if you continued across it.

Love the pics and want to do this trip. HELP! I’m lost.

What you see labeled as the Emigrant Trail, is HITR trail. That's what my Topo had it labeled as.
