If you are trying to get me to defend the morons that wrote that law, you won't succeed. They are the co-#1 target for my ire, right next to the NRA.

Understood; another technology is a ring or wristband that must be worn on your trigger finger/wrist. NJIT developed "Dynamic Grip Recognition" that goes off grip size/strength, which would be sufficient for me to be comfortable that my daughters couldn't discharge the weapon. All of these technologies ("dumb" guns included) have benefits and drawbacks. Let the free market decide what product works best for them, not some moron politicians and lobbyists.

Anyway back to the topic, I plan to keep a long gun in the storage area under the seat as secondary protection. Just tried with with a scoped AR and it won't fit due to the scope. In a couple weeks I'll have a basic AR with iron sites that will stay in there. If it gets stolen so be it. May look into a quick lock system.

I may end up removing the plastic storage compartment and using the hole it sat in as my rifle storage area. Probably won't be able to keep a 30 round mag inserted due to space but we will see.

If it goes as planned I will be able to flip the rear driver side seat up and remove the rifle.

Again, think about it. You walk in the door to find you're wife being beaten and raped do you really want to look for some stupid ring or wrist band so you can operate your weapon? These are going to be real world scenarios when your life or families life depends on it not a day out at the range for target practice. I'm not trying to be a d'bag but I think of the worst case first. If this technology will work under that I'm all for it but until then no way!

Please quit feeding the Phew. In one post he claims 1600 incidents, two pages later it's up to 16,000. For a "data" guy, he can't type for shit.
The argument for a smart gun vs. NRA is shit also. There is no market for it. If there was a market, someone would invent it! The Phew is the first person I know of who actually wants one. That alone speaks volumes. Challenge for you Phew, build your own! Make America great! Become rich!

True! Already edited my last post.;) This subject gets touchy because some don't think of the real world scenarios out there and all this technology crap is destine to fail at some point. If you really think your kids will somehow get ahold of your gun, please do not get one.

Maybe if this actually turns into something, you could lock it up...https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rear-under-seat-storage-unit-for-05-16-tacoma.397408/

I personally would never trust my family's life to a electronic smart gun. The chances of that damn thing not "sensing" my finger print or whatever seem to be more than likely to happen than my trusty glock jamming on me in time of need. If you are convinced that concealing a gun increases your families risk of being harmed then you definitely don't need to think about carrying dude. If my 5 year old son or daughter yanked my pistol from my iwb holster with the retention setting I have on it then It's definitely my fault for not being aware of my surroundings. Which is something that you need to be aware of at all times carrying or not. You just sound like those anti gun folk that are splattered all over the tv smh.

Sorry about continuing a topic we are trying to steer away from lol. I just keep my gun on my hip, but have looked into the wet okole seat covers with holster option. I just feel better with it on my hip then sitting in my glove box or center console. Seems to be a slow draw from those places .

Not too bad, but I have two issues.

    1. My car/truck gun is a post sample M4 (being a 07/02 FFL/SOT is difficult :D).
    2. Kiddo's car seat prevents easy access to it. In my last Tacoma I kept it behind the back seat, but the car seat kills that option.

I tried an SBR, but no luck with the aimpoint, that's what I would've preferred. Same problem here with the car seat, luckily it's just a booster though and not strapped in, so I can move it pretty easily. I figure it's a "last resort" gun and didn't really focus on accessibility. Hopefully I never need it!

All these look promising and it looks like only one requires drilling mounting holes (the Go Jotto lockable, last NRA link):

This closes in the console lid and has a kydex holster, but is OUTSIDE of the console and readily accessible:
    http://discretedefensesolutions.com/shop/vehicle-accessories/console-holster/

Front of the seat, looks like it mounts to the seat frame hardware:
    http://www.accufireproducts.com/gunsling-r.html
    http://www.desantisholster.com/KINGSTON-CAR-SEAT-HOLSTER

Similar to above, but on the side of the seat:
    http://www.protechoutdoors.com/concealment-holsters/seat-buddy/

    Other under steering wheel:

    http://www.gumcreekcustoms.com/
Review of the Gum Creek version - http://concealednation.org/2013/11/product-review-gum-creek-vehicle-handgun-mount/

This looks like an "anywhere" solution if you aren't opposed to attaching a velcro patch somewhere in your vehicle:
    http://www.tacticalholsters.com/product/GSG017.html

This one is lockable and looks like it could be mounted in a console:
    http://nrajottogear.gojotto.com/nra-handgun-by-jotto-desk.html

You could jere-rig something like this:

Or just say screw it and do this:
