No, all this lane departure garbage, but while you mention the brakes...it's the first vehicle I've driven that has them. I did fine with just normal working brakes for 50 years.

To be fair it's far less loaded up than other vehicles.

No one buys a Tacoma because it's "loaded." If you're looking for all the bells and whistles the Tacoma ain't it.

I don’t believe the Nannies are all optional in terms of Toyota choosing to put them in the truck. ABS, VSC, and TC are required by law. Anti-collision radar becomes a required standard next year, I believe, in Canada at least. Toyota was ahead of the pack on that one.

By Nanny’s I usually think of those as things that prevent you from doing something you want to do. I wasn’t sure which you were referring to.

Lane departure is a feature, not a nanny, at least by my definition. Doesn’t mean you gotta want it. I get your point.

The Tacoma is a popular truck and so there are a lot of them on the road. That said, you’re probably noticing them now due to Frequency Illusion. Said illusion is a phenomenon where our brains notice something for the first time and then start to see that thing everywhere, giving the illusion of increased frequency.

The frequency illusion has real effects unlike essential oils.

These aren't bell and whistles imo, they're a nuisance if you ask me. Bells, and whistles are leather seats, and power everything. My 2001 and all older toyota trucks were basic and reliable and should stay that way. Now we have all this computer run bs.

Another words, we have too many a-holes on the roads today that learned how to drive from a catalog. I get it.

Here's a chart (data from carfigures.com) of cumulative midsize truck sales in the US, 2010-2022. The dashed line is the cumulative gap between Tacoma and the next closest one. It's such a wide margin that it's hard to imagine it being overtaken unless Toyota makes a huge safety or design mistake. Of course, not all past sales are still on the road, so this inflates the numbers for all brands to some degree.

    Unfortunately it's not 2001 anymore.

I'd prefer a more simple truck too. But like I said....most vehicles have more things going on than a Tacoma.

Not much of it really bothers me. Most can be turned off. My truck has still been reliable.

What's actually a nuisance for you other than two decades passing?

Having no AC, no power windows, no power locks, etc in my 2003 was a nuisance as well.

Auto transmissions are an electronic nuisance... I hope you drive a stick.

I've had all automatics since the mid 80's, power windows, and door locks came on my 01 tundra. AC isn't a big deal for me, my 01 tundra was the 1st to have it, and I hardly used it. It was all the electronic nanny stuff that was a pita on this tacoma till I figured how to turn most of it off. It's something that I paid for, but didn't need nor want, yet the truck came with it.

Since there was some comparisons here in this thread with other midsize pickups, I thought here would be a good place to describe my experience renting a Colorado when I travelled to CA last week. The airport Avis I was renting from had so many pickups that it was actually the cheapest option. I was offered a Tacoma, but rather than rent what I drive every day, I thought it would be fun to try out a Colorado. I have to say, it made me appreciate my Tacoma even more. The Colorado was not a bad vehicle, but it was a rougher ride, felt smaller for some reason (maybe it is?), and the interior sucks IMO compared to my Tacoma. Only thing I will say the Colorado did better is the steering wheel controls made more sense haha!

And yes I saw a TON of Tacos from all generations in the bay area.

No money, all went to truck...
A friend just bought a Hyundai which has push button drive and reverse. It's driving him nuts having to look for the button. Also having to come to a complete stop before shifting is also infuriating.

I would bet if you had a graph show accumulated truck sales minus trucks removed from the road, the other trucks lines would be a lot more flat than the Tacoma. I see way more older Tacoma's on the road versus other older trucks. And the Tacoma's are usually in way better shape. This was part of my reason in buying a Tacoma. They last longer.
