    x3!

but has anyone every shot a wad of birdshot at an abandoned car door, close range? it is like a fistfull of lead. tight, and hard hitting. inside a home it would be devastating. outside, not so much.

Regular 7.62x39mm isn't going to kill your neighbor. It may penetrate a cinderblock wall if shot squarely, by then it has lost too much energy to do much else.

There are numerous recorded cases where it took 7-8 rounds of 9mm to stop an attacker. Consider a large-frame intruder with a heavy jacket, maybe on drugs. How long does it take for an intruder to cross the length of your living room? If he's armed with a crowbar?

theres plenty of cases where a single .22lr has killed a person too...and ive seen cases of people being hit with .45 multiple times and surviving

every round can be lethal...its all about shot placement

i have 2 thoughts concerning what to use for home defense

1, if youre trained in building clearing and feel comfortable enough to do this safely...a pistol is where you should go...period

2, if you're planning on squirreling away in a back room (which is what the majority of you should be doing) and calling 911...arm yourself with a shotgun...do NOT rack the slide to "scare" the intruder...you'll give away your position...and in your house in the dark...you have the tactical advantage...no point in helping them out

What most people are overlooking though, is that most home invasions, or burglaries, occur during the day while you're away at work

Burglars watch neighborhoods, and they know when people are around...they watch your trash to see what kind of stuff youre buying...just like you dont ever want to meet them face to face...they also dont want to come thru your window and meet you

do some sort of strenuous exercise before shooting...get the heart rate up...then focus on the target

practice shooting with 1 hand (both)
practice what to do when the gun doesnt go bang
    etc etc

Too many people just buy a shotgun, throw some shot in there and call it good

Take that gun out and check out the patterns at different distances that you may encounter in your home

I dont believe in lights or lasers attached to the gun, but rather opt for a flashlight held by my non-dominant hand off to the side

say youre walking thru your home investigating a bump in the night with your flashlight and that person who is entering your home intends to do you harm to protect himself...you flash that light thats attached to the gun...or the laser...he now has somewhere to aim...if your flashlight is held off to the side by your non dominant hand...and he aims towards the light...you have a LOT less chance of getting hit

The funny thing is, you're agreeing with me. I mean, 00 is better than #4 buck for stopping power. Absolutely. But as my first post said, #4 is COMPROMISE between stopping power, and less likely to overpenetrate.

Yeah, know where your walls are, again we agree. But planning not to shoot at a particular wall is poor planning. I'd rather have the idea that the wall seperating me from my kid WILL be hit, and plan accordingly. Not cuz I can't shoot straight, but rather b/c adrenaline, poor lighting, target movement, etc will pretty much ensure that not every round downrange will hit a BG, and stop IN the BG (remember that word, OVERpenetrate?) I think you're focusing on shooting a wall point blank, whereas I'm talking about hitting your target, the bullet passing through, and then hitting the wall.

Anyway, FWIW, I've seen probably 40+ folks shot with shotguns. None died. Those that did stayed on scene, not came to the hospital, so I can't comment on the rounds used.

I'm guessing that the 9mm handgun was shooting a FMJ bullet. FMJ bullets do not expand and as such, often times punch right through their intended target. Any decent JHP or frangible bullet will fix that.

FWIW, the 9 vs. 40 vs. 45 debate is a circle jerk. There are differences between how much ass each round brings to the table, but in the real world the differences are pretty much nonexistent. General rule of thumb with a handgun: 1) Shot placement is key. 2) Anyone worth shooting once is worth shooting a dozen times.

    ------

OP: A good 12 gauge, pump action shotgun with a light, Modified choke and 00 buckshot would be an ideal set up. It's a show stopper. The AK is an awesome weapon, but poorly suited for your needs. Now, if you need one gun to do it all - as in a gun that you plan to carry with you and then keep on the nightstand - find yourself a good pistol. All of the major manufacturers are turning out good stuff these days.

Oh, and "racking the slide" to scare away the bad guy is retarded and a good way to get Sean Taylored. I would immediately distrust anyone who recommended it. It can serve no purpose but to give away your biggest advantage: it lets the bad guy know exactly where you are (kinda like laser sights).

Dude. Really? I mean they are fun little guns to play around with at the range, but for self-defense? What's the point?

I'm really NOT agreeing with you, at all. I'm saying #4 will still penetrate drywall and NOT do the job.

And if you shoot a wall with your kid behind with with #4 buck, it will STILL go through. Try it or go look at box o truth where #4 BIRDSHOT goes through 2-3 sheets of sheetrock. How far will buck go then, buddy?

Lastly, of course I'm talking about missing and hitting a wall. You're confusing your own arguments:

First, you can't avoid walls with your kids behind them in the middle of the night because you're confused and tired with adrenaline going. Then, the only way your #4 buck will hit that wall is if it hits your target and passes through?

    Which is it?

Lastly, ever shot a... buck with 00 buck? Doesn't do a whole lot of penetration once it encounters a human target, does it?

    Exactly.

This is your best option for defense.
3 slugs plus shot X 6 as fast as you can pull the trigger?
Like having 3 45acp rounds plus shot going off with each trigger pull.
