I would go with the old faithful 12g shotgun, best home defense to have. pellets spread out alittle farther than a bullet. Don't get me wrong have have a 45 also. Most home invaders if they do have a gun their nt going to have it in their hands if they're there to steal stuff, it would be in their pocket or jacket pocket.

Alarm Systems: If you have an alarm system in your house, DON'T use the protective sticker advertising the alarm company. While it is offered with good intentions, the name of the alarm company tells the practiced burglar what kind of system you have. He has the wiring diagrams to all the major systems, so he knows exactly how to pry open the control cover and cut the right wire before the alarm has a chance to send its signal.

Instead, of using the company's pretty sticker, if you feel a warning is a deterrent, then buy or make a generic one that simply says "HOUSE UNDER SURVEILLANCE" Don't tell that you have motion detectors, floor contacts, wired windows, or even silent alarms. Keep them guessing. The less you advertise the safer you are.

People used to kill kangaroos with boomerangs. i vote that. no over penetration and blunt force trauma to the neck!

or you could put a rock in a piece of cloth and sling it at the bad guy. hit him in the eye!

But of the two choices i would go with a 9mm semi auto, whether it be pistol or small rifle. a hollow point 9mm to the chest will hurt. once you pull that trigger dont stop till he is on the ground.

and i really wasnt going to say anything but i just finished my last exam so i am feelin froggy. for all those people saying that you need to be sure you are not shooting through a wall into someone elses room... i doubt you will have the clear or conscious thoughts at the time to think of more than me or him. especially if he comes at you or is wielding a weapon as well. I am not saying it is a bad idea to think about these things before hand but instead just that realistically 99% of the people in this world would not have that thought capacity once they get tunnel vision on the intruder.

you are foggy. this is exactly the reason why you need to think about it BEFORE the firefight starts.

i still vote 9mm out of the two choices.

Glock 19 with a light on the end of it for when Im ready to light him up.

I also have a 12 guage shotgun with 00 in it.

Shotgun stays beside the bed for my fiance, I have hollowpoints in my glock.

I've trained a lot on stressful situations and shooting, I miss once out of every 10. In stressful situations.

I always know where everyone is in my house.

I have only had to go through my house with a pistol once, and when I found the guy looking through the window he was staring at the end of my glock.

    He ran away very fast.

Also if you do use a AK/Shotgun/Rifle (I do not endorse using AK's or rifles for home defense) but if you do make sure you

    A) take a class on how to properly clear a house with a long gun
    B) Practice yourself going through your house with a long gun and knowing what is behind every wall.
    C) Dont use a long gun.

Long guns are tricky to take through a house and clear the house properly where a pistol its a lot easier.

Regardless of any situation if you think someone is breaking into your house

    CALL 911!!!!

Then proceed through your house, I do NOT want to take someones life unless I HAVE to.

In most cases I just call the cops and chill with my family if we are all together why go through the house if the cops are on the way?

He can have what he wants as long as my family is safe.

    Just my .02$

Edit the whole thing on long guns is because I have seen people in class think they *know* how to use a long gun and the were practicing clearing a room/house and they got their long gun forcefully taken away from them. It opened up my eyes about a lot of things with long guns. (while clearing a house)

Of course the regular criminal will run but what if you get someone who has nothing to lose and they do take that gun......

    You......

    Your family.......

I didn't vote because neither are truly what's best for home defense.

If you live in a suburban area where houses are 20yds apart than both rounds will surely over penetrate. Get yourself a mossy 500 or remmy 870 in 20gauge (with a stock and if possible a forend light) and load with hornady home defense rounds. That is the honest to God professional advise I give everybody who asks the "What gun should I get for HD" question.

I want to add for all the "I don't miss" guys out there - I train with weapons alot. It's a big part of my job. Our current statistics that the Dept of Justice holds shows a less than 30% hit rate in officer involved shootings (OIS). Thats considering people who shoot/train regularly in highly stressful environments (Induced anxiety, high BPM's, reflexive scenarios, simunitions where the BG shoots back). So don't give me your "I go to the range and shoot at static targets" or "I shoot IDPA/IPSC" bull crap statements. You are going to miss ALOT when the excrement hits the fan due to loss of fine motor skills, tunnel vision, uncontrolled breathing, low light, disorientation, etc.

You are accountable for each round you send downrange and statistics show even trained officers will miss 7/10 times in OIS situations. It's just the facts.

Thats whats in my glock expensive!!!! But good.

Also make sure you use them, practice with them make sure they dont pull or do anything different than your regular BS ammo

It's nothing like a .45 ACP. The 45 is good at what it does because it launches 185-230 gr bullet that expands. Muzzle velocity on the Judge is 300-450 fps slower than the .45 ACP.

The .410 load doesn't have "real" slugs. The disks are 70 gr in weight and don't expand OR penetrate deeply enough. Coming from a short barrel, velocity sucks - roughly 700 fps muzzle velocity. They aren't traveling fast enough to deliver significant hydrostatic shock. The disks are the same weight as a 32 ACP bullet, but with less sectional density. Put another way, a 32 ACP pocket gun brings more ass.

On top of that, the "slug" disks are being chased by #12 bird shot which, when fired from a 3" barrel, wont do much except piss someone off beyond 3 yards. Hell, Dick Cheney's 78 year old buddy took a load of larger-in-size birdshot to the face - from a larger bore shotgun with a full 28" of barrel at 20-30 yards! - and walked it off. #12 BB is worthless for anything larger than a snake.

An modern 9mm pistol will hold 3x more rounds than the Judge and fire a round that is more powerful and effective than the Judge. It will also be easier to control, meaning follow up shots come much faster.

We're way off-topic here, so I'll be brief. Then leave well enough alone.
I've seen 00 "not do the job" on plenty of folks. Sure, #4 wouldn't either. Like I said though, you don't need to kill to stop a person.

6 layers, according to BOT, for #4. Yeah, I've known about that site for a while. 00 penetrated farther.

No... A) because I don't hunt, and B) I'd hope that if I did, I wouldn't shoot a buck with a person standing behind him. I get your point, but a buck tends to be a bit wider (depending on the shot angle) than a human. But I get your point.

You load your shottie with what you want, I'll do what I want. FWIW, my rounds get progressively bigger. One of #4, 2 of 00, and one buck/ball (.65 inch ball with 5 00). My reasoning: #4 gets the message across, probably won't kill but hopefully stop, and penetrates less than 00. The 00 rounds are the "he kept coming" round. The last is the "guess we need bigger rounds still!" mentality. If he's still coming after that, well I guess I'll crap my self and go for the pistol. Or throw my excrement at the guy and hopefully hit him in the eyes so I can butt-stroke him.

also keep in mind the barrel length. Personally, id much rather have something with a shorter barrel while going around corners so i can hug the corners more easily. With an AK chances are its gonna be harder to go around corners with.

If someone gets past my 2 dogs, they will be in for a very rude awakining.

I get the point re sectional density of the discs..I'd still hate to eat 3 of those.
The shot in the shell is BB....there is 12 of them.
Not No. 12 shot, which I've never seen.

Agreed! Eating even one of those would definitely ruin my day, but I still dont think it's adequate for self-defense. Regardless, I hope you never have to find out.

    ----

Yeah, the #12 thing was a brain fart on my part. Good catch. Been snowed in for the past few days and the bourbon is about gone. Things are getting weird...
