I think the round in the gun is as, if not more, important than the gun it comes out of. If you're breaking into my house you'll have to deal with a pretty bad piece of lead. I use a .357 for my "bedroom" gun and it has 7 rounds 125 grain Gold Dot Personal Defense ready to go. They transfer 584 ft/lbs energy of within 12 inches of travel. They're not cheap at about $1.25 a round. Practice with something else. Also for me and maybe not others the .357 is a good balance of recoil, power, and pure reliability.

Here's a good read on self-defense ammo. It's a little old but still important. http://www.chuckhawks.com/ammo_by_anonymous.htm

Of course you get as many opinions on guns and ammo as you will on Sport vs Off-Road.:D

Edit: One more thing. Really the last thing you want to do is actually shoot and kill someone. Be willing to do so if necessary though. It would be a better situation to have the intruder see what you have and haul butt out of the house. For that reason and also so you have the ability to shoot without looking through the sights, I feel a laser sight is a good investment. They are quite expensive but man do they work. If a bad guy saw the bright red or green dot on their chest I would think it would put the fear of God in them and high tail it out of there.

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
You want the biggest round that you can accurately and confidently bring to the fight. Other concerns enter into this equation, ie. over-penetration, training, kids, etc. Take all of these and pick the best equipment.
The best advice for a self defense is Have A Gun! A .22lr revolver in your hand is better than a .50 S&W in the attic.
An AK is a poor choice for self defense, unless you're a warlord. Who cares about collateral damage?

How many of you had actually had the opportunity to shoot someone in a residential situation..if you did and had confidence in your accuracy and your firearm you would undrstand that the 9mm is best for home safety, with the average 9mm having accuracy to approximately 35 meters...not yards and not feet...and thats your average 9mm ...not the best..or one of the best.......however, this whole drywall thing is more of an American thing....where I come from homes are made of brick and then those that are rural and squarter settlements made of mud and tin... a .22 can penetrate a drywall hit at the right spot (or the wrong spot) if we must say....My opinion...9mm a steady hand and an eagerness to finish the fucking job...this is my home and my fucking family...I would use a fucking kitchen knife if I have to protect them....

I voted 9mm because it is much easier to weild indoors than an AK. But yeah, nothin says "get the f out of my living room" like the chambering of a 12ga shell

12 ga....I don't want to kill anyone and by alternating rounds between 00 and 6's my thinking is I may not have to, my 12 ga has a 10 round tube and my 357 winchester is always within reach.

Best quote I've heard came from Travis Haley of Magpul. "I don't use a pump to scare someone, I use a pump to shoot someone." Granted that frame of mind is training and family dependant, but its still good. As for me, I live in an apartment and sleep with my M&P close by.
