So been doing some research on which rounds penetrate the least but are considered a good round for threat stopping.
Obviously shot placement is key but personally I'd rather be protecting my home/family with a 9mm/40/556/12G/20G than a 22 LR.

Now I see a lot of people in the school of "pump shotgun is the best for home defense and it's the only option for sane people".

There seems to be only a handful of people that use an AR type weapon for home defense.

All this leads to what do YOU use and why.

EDIT: compiling some info from various internet sources on the 9mm/40 vs 556.

Shot gun is nice inside because it covers a lot of area and doesn't normally go through walls. All just depends on scenario.

I have a pump 12ga and a semi auto pistol for defense. The plan is to grab whichever is closest when the time arises.

At home defense ranges a shotgun round will only spread to a few inches, will easily penetrate walls just as much as pistol rounds. Not saying a shotgun is a bad choice for home defense, just don't have unrealistic expectations of painting a wall with shot at 5 yards.

Remington 870 with some work done to it. I chose this because of the availability of different rounds to chose from as far as ammo goes. I currently have PDX personal defense rounds alternated with 00 buck. The PDX round is essentially a 1oz slug with 3-00 buck pellets on top of it. 12 gauge will stop anything unless you are using bird shot so the stopping power it huge. Aim is a bit easier when under distress when using shotguns, don't get me wrong, you still have to aim. No matter what gun you get the most important part of any home defense gun is practice. A good practice to do is measure out distances in your house and use those when practicing. I laid out silhouette targets at the greatest distance in my house which is my hallway at 25 ft and practiced using both rounds several times to see where rounds were impacting and if there was any strays. With my gun at 25 ft, all 9 balls from 00 buck will hit target. That is essentially 9-9mm rounds hitting at once. This is just my .02

Urban legend and completely false. We've tested this out quite a bit and if you know how your shotgun patterns you likely know that it will group tight still at most home defense distances. We also tested various shotgun loads (and other rounds for that matter) and the drywall penetration was substantial. The fact that people still parrot this information as if it were fact scares me that one of my neighbors is going to take me or my wife out some night just pointing a shotgun in the general direction of a noise and squeezing of rounds because... you know... they don't need to worry about aiming or their target's background.

Good choice, pick up some hornady TAP and you have an awesome home defense gun.

I'm going to compile some links and info to put in the OP that will hopefully show some people the penetration difference of 556 and 9mm.

Buckshot wil penetrate about the same as 9mm, light load birdshot isn't likely to penetrate multiple layers but I personally wouldn't want to use birdshot for home defense.

I used to keep a full-size M&P in my headboard loaded with winchester hollow points, got a weapon mounted light for it and I loved it.

    NVM! found it via http://ingunowners.com/

The TAP is a lightly designed bullet that is actually similar in construction to a varmint type bullet. It is designed to expand inside the bad guy. The green tip is the politically correct "Geneva Convention" approved military fodder that complies with international military laws for use on your opponent, it also will penetrate windshields and walls better than expansion type bullets like the very effective personal defense bullets.
