I'm on the other side of the country from you, but if you can wrench your Taco, you can replace a water heater. There's nothing complicated or special about it. Save some $$$ and do it yourself and pocket the savings for more truck mods.

Just remember, must be in a platform. Flex has a length limit. Use pipe dope on your connections and check them for leaks. If you don’t have valves, now would be a good time to add them.

1-800-water heaters. But like others have said, easy enough to do.

If you’re on gas consider a tankless. Never run out of hot water. Much smaller and easier to install.

I replace water heaters all the time at our rental properties, the worst part are the spiders. Besides that it's pretty straight forward.

I usually drain the water out of the old one first by connecting a garden hose and routing it outside. It'll make it lighter to lift the unit out.

It's earthquake country. Having 40 or 50 gallons of water on-hand makes a lot of sense.

The other bad part of tankless is hard water.
I am in concord and need to replace mine. Everyone that puts tankless around here has problems unless they have whole house filters.
The minerals clog them like mofo’s...

I need an 80 gal gas to replace my 80 gal gas from 1997.... it probably has a 4 inch thick layer of mineral inside and would explain it running out of hot water quickly. Never been drained lol.

Can’t get much more earthquake country than L A County which is where I am. If you are relying on a hot water heater for water you are woefully unprepared.

Of all of the means to supply potable water that are around a good old fashioned solar still can’t be beat.

I’m not sure I follow your logic. But I’d much rather have a heater full of potable water than rely on a still for making water.

I know you said you're on gas but consider a heat pump water heater. Annual energy cost is half that of gas. You can also usually get a $500 rebate when you file you taxes.

Natural gas is cost efficient and the heat pump heaters are about 2 to 3 times the cost with similar warranty/lifetime. I did see the federal energy rebate is $300 with up to a $750 "local" rebate. The other downside is they typically work best in 40-90º spaces with at least a 1000 cubic feet of airspace (to dump the cool air). There's also some discussion of recovery rates making a heat pump less desirable for a large family.

Cool idea but seems like it requires careful thought before committing to one.

    Thanks for the pointer!

Move out of California and get a tankless. They work great, even with dirty Jersey water. Tagaki FTW

That's not an expense that will pay off. If you're gonna move, leave the heater for someone else :D

Bradford White for the water heater. Best in the market for hard water. Buy once, cry once
