Sometimes I leave them out if I'm working at home , but generally I just have gotten in the habit of putting them back where they go , especially with my hand tools

Hey guys, has anyone installed radiant heat floors in their home? Thoughts or opinions on staple up under the floor joists, vs warm board?

    thanks in advance

Yes , I have on my own house and a couple other homes

Warmboard is more efficient that staple up but stupid expensive , I prefer 1 1/2" of concrete over framing , this is also the most efficient way to retain the heat as well

the problem is, my house is 108 years old and I have the original hardwood floors. they are on their last leg and my furnace is 20 years old, so I figured i may just upgrade both. I have no subfloor, so do i pull up the current floors, lay warmboard, then put new floors on top? or do I put floors on top of the originals, and staple up radiant. Im concerned that with the thermal properties of wood, the water would have to be outrageously hot to heat up the house. It is only 950 sq ft, so its not that much space to heat.

are there any other decent options for a "retro fit"?

No subfloor at all ? ie flooring is nailed to the joists ?

So I would have to assume any interior walls are built on top of the flooring then I guess

Does your house have a crawlspace or a basement ?

yes, interior walls are built on top of the floors. half is a basement (about 6 feet high ceilings) the other half is a crawl space (about 4 foot high ceilings)

I would be inclined to leave the existing flooring and go over it , and use a staple up system but that would come down to whether your new flooring would be fine going over the old

Adding insulation to the joist bays will help push the heat up

I'm going to stay with hardwood floors throughout the house, so they can be put directly on top of what I have. so insulation as well as the aluminum plates?

You can go without insulation , but even an R12 batt will help push the heat up rather than losing a bunch down into the crawl

Does he even need insulation? Considering heat rises. Maybe a moisture barrier of some sort...insulation seems like overkill.

    Need , no

Perform better as far as pushing the heat up , without question

By the way Oz...got some hardi siding delivered today and did a test run. It will be tyvec rap(taped) then 1" foil board...then the hardi siding. Hardi recommends we use a 8d nail...we will be using stainless 8d nails( that's gonna get pricy). Anyway did a test run on a piece cut into thirds and it nails fine with a framer...as long as you are hitting the studs. Pretty much like ship lap(but about ten times the cost)
