nope- new work box. Old work boxes are in wall boxes, new work are surface mounted or drywall mounted. Pancake box would be a great option there too.

This is basically what I did, but made my own out of scraps. Coated on all sides and long deck screws so can be removed without removing the whole light. With the hail we get, anything vinyl doesn’t last long.

I hate that. That was one of my first “house projects” when we bought this place. Filled a bunch of plastic trash bags with cat litter and poured paint in them. Then just flopped the bag around to mix it. Add more paint or more litter as needed. Best way to get rid of multiple cans at a time.

You have a link to what you're referring to or a photo? I went to Home Depot yesterday and just about everything that looked like it was supposed to be surface mounted was for conduit and way too thick. It would stick above the siding if it was attached to the sheathing. Everything else was meant to mount in the wall. Either nailed to a stud (new work) or through a hole (old work) in the sheathing/drywall.

I think something like these :)

you’re gonna want one of these too if you’ve got vinyl siding

Gotcha. They didn't have anything like that first one at HD. I did pick up one of the second ones. I was thinking of mounting it to a regular old work box, so it would take up the gap between the sheathing and light base for a more solid mount.

Is there a box behind the wall where those wires are coming out?! If not, you need a box or you’re just redoing it without following code. IF there is, I believe they make a box extension.

No box is visible. It's just a hole that was drilled to get the wire through. My plan is to put one of these in the wall and then put this over it to fill the space between the base of the light and the box.

That’s kind of the point of the pancake/new work box you linked. Run a 4” hole saw on the siding, surface mount the box and mount the light. Or use the first linked box, using the same process. The sconce for the light fills the “void” for either of those boxes. You can use both, it would technically meet code considering the wiring is in a box, just a bit overkill. Btw- In case it’s misunderstood, no attempt to be critical, just sharing my limited experience and knowledge on the subject.

Either way, best of luck. Wiring and plumbing is a whole new level of DIY!

Fun with plumbing…had a dripping kitchen sink faucet, replaced the cartridge, cut out the 22 year old shutoff valves and replaced them with ¼ turn shark bites valves, and replaced all the hoses while I was under there. To all you professional plumbers out there, more power to you, because a 2’ x 3’ space was not made for a 200# person to work in comfortably. Once in a awhile I don’t mind, but not every day.

What are you guys using for a miter saw stand? I guess throw out saw suggestions too although I think I am set on the 7-1/4 dewalt 20v saw if/when I can justify getting it.

Delta folding stand for my 12” dewalt. Couldn't do the smaller saw with the projects I have. The stand has outriggers, stable, folds up to roll around (I have to move it a lot). Love the thing. I have a little side standie thingy (thats the technical term:rolleyes:) to help feed the 12’ siding and 16’ deck boards as well.
..Pardon the mess, in the middle of basically rebuilding my entire house from the outside down to the studs and back.

I can't get past the lack of table surface on those fold out stands , I'm used to banging a nail in aa a quick stop for multiples , I even own the DeWalt folding stand but I couldn't get used to it with my regular work routine
