How deep should I bury 4” schedule 40 PVC for a gutter drain line? It will be right beside the driveway and will only see a car or truck drive across it, never will have one parked directly above it.

Edit: or maybe 3” pipe, there is only a small section of gutter going to it (maybe 14’ of gutter). I want to drain this downspout off the driveway to avoid ice in the winter.

Is this how people fall into things? I was visiting my brother in-law that I did the bathroom tile for. He told me the neighbor saw me working and wants to hire me for a tile project in their house. More tile work would be a hard no from me, but if I needed money I could see myself sliding down that path.

A 3inch pipe isnt going to fill up enough to have an ice worry imo. Id say 6-8 inches above the pipe myself. About what i did for my gutter drains (black drain pipe stuff)

I used that black drain pipe and buried it probably a foot down..... wasn't sure how it would take to being driven on, so I went deep.

I’m not too worried about it freezing up, just don’t want to crush it.

more important than depth is proper compaction of material under and around pipe and use a heavier wall PVC pipe and not Big-O , a couple inches of compactable material under pipe and 12" of cover min if you're driving on it

Thought I would post in here, I have built a 25x25x10 shop in the backyard. I'm working on getting quotes for running power to the shop.

First quote was for $6300 to run estimated 100' new line of service 200 amp to the building.

Waiting for more quotes, but sounds unreasonably high.

This also has me considering not getting 200 amp service and just sacrificing to a 100 amp sub panel.
Just means that I may have to be more conservative on letting every machine I want to buy be running at same time in the future.

At least I can do the sub panel myself though.

Just looking for thoughts because though I stayed calm, I was hugely let down when he said $6300.

Is that $6300 just to run service to the meter base, or does that include installation, cable, etc? Either way, seems crazy high. Other than bringing in the supply from the pole, it's all a very simple job that you can do on your own.

Bringing power from the pole has to be done by Power Company I thought?

That was them telling me pulling permit, running power to building, and "per code" they told me they have to hook up the panel, and wire 1 plug and 1 light.

I was under the impression the power company runs the wire from the pole to meter for free just to get the new line of service. So an extra payment every month.
I could be wrong on that though.

Not sure of the specifics for your location, in most places the utility company will pull power to a service provided it's within X' feet of the property; that's typically a pole's distance or less. I would call whichever government agency is responsible for such things. In my area, the homeowner can do anything electrical to their home/structures on their property. It has to be inspected, and usually receives a more rigorous inspection than a ticketed sparky would get, but it also costs a lot less. When I bought my home, the meter based was spiked to an old cedar stump; I installed a brand-new service, and did everything from the weather head to the panel myself. I saved about $3000.

    Working on it ...
I am in the process of renovating a house built in 1907. With all the work that I needed to do on this project, I needed to subcontract out a couple pieces, one of them was electrical. The first quote that I had, the guy came in and wanted to do time and material. To me that was like handing them a blank check and I said no thanks. Then next up came in and told me it is going to be between eight and $10,000 probably more. Next guy came in couldn’t run out of the house and get off the property fast enough. The third guy came in give me a quote, ended up doing all the work plus some extra stuff for $3725.00 complete.

Some guys will come in and way overpriced the job because they really don’t want the job. But if you’re willing to pay their premium maybe they’ll come and do it.

The point here is you got to get at least three estimates and do your homework.

so why can’t this be done, say the wire from pole to meter supports 400-500 amps going to meter with a main breaker right below meter on house as a master throw. From that master breaker you have a wire running into house and one running to shop.

Wire going into house is to a 200 amp panel, wire to shop first hits another master switch on outside of building, then goes through my conduit to 200 amp panel inside shop.

    check out my drawing.
