Can anyone here give me a ball park-ish estimate on what 1000 sq ft of artificial turf, and about 1200 sq ft of decomposed granite should cost? (I'm in Southern California.)

I have two wildly different estimates, one is $13,000 and the other is $30,000. I'm wondering which one is crazy. lol

I have worked my way up the chipper ladder, let me save you a lot of money. Do not buy anything that runs on electricity. I kept buying bigger and bigger electric chippers and they were all junk. I finally ended up with one like this:

This is a picture of garbage. I got rid of it one day in a bad mood and gave it to goodwill - to frustrate somebody else. I should have taken it to the desert for target practice.

I finally found something like this on craigslist
    [IMG]

It was better, but not great. It has hammers that spin around and beat the wood chips to little pieces. As long as it was used with dry wood it did a good job. But, with green wood it would plug up and cleaning it out was a PITA. Also it didn't work well with fall leaves.

In the end I sold it and started renting the big, tow behind the truck chippers. I don't know how the costs compare, but I will pay money to remove frustrations from my life.

Thanks for the insight. I had a feeling that the small ones were almost worthless.

I guess I'll just rent a big one once in a while. The good news is, since my brush piles are not big and only of small diameter branches, I'll only need it for a few minutes! LOL

I would have to agree. The cost of a decent mid size doesn’t make sense for a few times a year. Top loaders and/or electric units often just spin the branches around and inflict pain and injury. Gas powered side loads are better but slow and arduous. I’ve used several brands including Toro, Troy Built, Vermeer and a couple of generic ones...but none of them really did what I needed/wanted them to do.

    Here's an odd request/question.

We have your usually pesky mosquitoes, huge ass flies - deer, barnyard, house flies, wasps, etc.....pretty much have a grip on them. But we have these hang around very small flies, almost like gnats but a bit bigger. They don't bite or do much harm that I know, but they are constantly in the shop making these squared off hovering circles......they are pretty nimble.

What they hell are they and how to get rid of them?

We're pretty much done our exterior walls , and our sub-slab plumbing passed inspection today so we will move back to prepping the slab with insulation , vapour barrier and reinforcing so the plumber can come back to lay the hydronic heat tubing

Horizontal shear? We never do that here. The strength axis is stronger with the grain so it goes vertical.

    Framing looks clean. Nice work.

Plywood is almost always installed horizontally here . Only time I see it installed vertically is when I watch youtube videos of framers in California lol

In the actual seismic shear wall sections all panel edges are blocked

all spec'ed by a structural engineer

I saw the perimeter blocking. That's standard here as well. I wish we could lay it horizontal. So much easier. I can guarantee the house won't fall down regardless of which way it's installed. lol

Sheeting running perpendicular to the studs is actually stronger , just don't try to convince a California builder of that though , they've all been brainwashed haha
