I've got granite, had it for +/- 10 years and only sealed it when installed. No stains, smell or anything. Looks just like the day it was installed.

I can't imagine a trend back to tile counters (with nasty grout lines) or laminate (burns, chips, cuts, etc). What works better?

Same mine are 11 years old. We’re installed before I bought the house. I think they use a resin so you don’t have to seal them. Mine bead water the only part that’s porous and unsealed is the bottom

I have one spot that stained a bit where the coffee maker sat but other than that, mine are still good after about 9 years.

My first house had tile countertops, my second had laminate. I'll take granite over either of those!

I'm guessing that in 30 years there's going to be quite a few that's not going to be so nice, not really a fad as originally proposed.

What in the hell is this? :D
This is what I have. I don't think I’d do it again. I wanted granite next but I'm rethinking that.

If you have granite I recommend "Granite Gold" products (daily cleaner, polish, and sealer) for maintenance. HD usually carries them.

Buying Art is like buying anything else: if you like it hang it up and always buy based on quality and good materials. We have a ton of art in the house, and I think we have only ever taken one thing down after 10 years or so because it faded. It’s also important to mix media in you collection. We have prints, paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics (too much) and outside 3D work.

I’m currently looking for a hanging sculpture or 3D work for our porch, but we disagree on the style. I want bright pop art and my wife wants something less bold.

Also, buy direct from the artist if you can. Galleries take around 50% of the sale. Some times more. You can get better work in the emerging artist group with direct sales, and they will like you better too. I once sold a piece in Baltimore for $120 and my final cut after gallery and insured shipping and material was under $20.
